Default Transmission problem

Hey guys, my car has been doing this weird thing lately. When I shift from 2nd to 3rd there is a weird "jolt" feeling I can feel on the gear shift. Its kinda hard to describe, I can feel the "gears" kinda grinding when I shift it into 3rd. You can also hear a slight "thuk" sound also. This happens like 15-20% of the time and is more prevalent when the car is cold. I was wondering what kind of problem this might be and if its something I should be concerned about. This only happens on 3rd gear. I try to double clutch to avoid this problem and it seems to be working but I dont want to double clutch every time I go into 3rd.

Car:
M.Y 2000, 175k miles rebuilt motor.

Happened to me a few times. Changed the transmission fluid then it went away. Try that.

Same issue with mine. Changed the MTF to Honda but same issue.. Been double clutching for quite some time but not too much fun to drive. Be prepared to choose between rebuiling and getting a used tranny. I got a used AP2 tranny and it's much better to drive than the AP1. I got a ussed one coz rebuilding is far more expensive here and you can't buy only the synchros. You'll have to purchase the whole gear set! Aftermarket synchros also weren't available. Would have chosen rebuilding it, it just so happen that the store where I bought the tranny from doesn't know the difference between tha AP1 and AP2 tranny and got a really good deal for it.

How much did the job cost total? and how did you decide when to swap out the trans?

Double-clutch while cold. Once warmed up, drive normally.

If it gets worse, swap to used ap2 trans with the improved syncros.

When you shift 2 to 3, don't move the lever in a straight diagonal line. Move it zig zag - up to neutral, right to be inline with 3, then up. See if that helps.

Does anyone know roughly how much a swap would cost?

The infamous 2nd to 3rd gear "grind". Its not really a grind and is fairly normal in the Ap1. Try shifting at a slightly higher rpm. Around 4000-4500 or so.
