Default Vibration in gear shifter?

Hi,

My gear shifter has been vibrating ever since I've bought my s2000 (has about 100.000 miles on it), and I was reassured by the mechanic at my own Honda dealer that this is quite normal for an s2000. So I did not pay to much attention to the vibrations. Lately, however, I've noted that at high rpm (8000-9000) the gear shifter also makes a noise (probably related to the vibrations, since it only makes noise when I do not put my hand on the gear shifter). So, my question: does anyone else have this vibrating gear shifter and associated noise at high RPM?

The shifter is directly into the transmission with no cables like most shifter assemblies.
Vibration is very normal. If it is rattling and you can hear it not just feel it then maybe something is lose. Can open it up and check it out. Make sure the shift knob and locking nut are tightened before opening anything up though.

Thx for the replies. I am re-assured on the vibrations. As for the noise, I will consult the Honda mechanics to see what they can find.

There are plastic bearing parts on the shifter that may be worn and/or damaged.
Extra play = extra vibrations.
Those parts are relatively cheap but do need some knowledge to install.
You can't use too much grease on the shifter

If you search for "shifter" you probably find enough posts with links to pics on how to remove and install the shifter.

I had this problem before. I took out my shifter to have a better look and the problem. The plastc piece that surrounds the ball of the shifter was in 2 pieces, replaced it and noise was gone.

I have extra ones of those if you need one as they are backed up from Honda sometimes.
Very easy to replace them. Just 3 bolts hold the shifter in if I remember correctly.

After so many years the plastic pieces will dry up and crack. There is DIY write up around here somewhere on removing the shifter, pretty easy.
