Default Vortech Larger Air Filter

Has anyone had success upgrading the Vortech Air Filter? It's mighty small.

I'm experimenting to see if the air filter for the 350Z Vortech kit will fit (still waiting for it to arrive). It bolts directly onto the compressor.

But I don't think it will fit and will hit the radiator. So, I'm searching for a 3.5" 80 degree 'ish elbow, and just fabricate a mounting bracket. Any ideas?

KN part#rf-1023 is larger, doesn't fit in the vortech airbox, but it does fit on the 90 deg. elbow. I also have a 350z vortech filter on order. I'll try to post pics of the kn1023

Don't care about the air box. The 350Z might also work with the elbow as it's offset... If not then that K&N will do.

The 1023 has a 10deg offset inlet, and fits pretty good. I'm either going to build an aitbox around this filter, or use the 350Z filter, which has an offset inlet and a fitting for the breather in the valve cover as well. The 350Z Vortech install instructions are on the Vortech site and has a good picture of the back of the filter.

That works well with the 10 degree offset. The end result is about the same as an 80 degree elbow. You're getting away without a mounting bracket?

One reason I like what you have now better than the 350Z filter is I'm concerned about warm air from the radiator going into the intake with the 350Z filter. With that to the side there is a better chance of drawing cooler air.

I looked at the installation manual, and I like how the 350Z filter fits with the breather hose. But, I still think it may hit the radiator. I guess we'll both see shortly.

Sorry no mounting bracket. I just stuck the filter on yesterday. I'm waiting for the other filter to see what my best air filter option is. I'll end up building an box around either filter and incorperate a support for the filter.

I have been torturing myself for 6 months trying to "make things work" until I finally gave up, bought a Comptech foam filter and had a machine shop make an elbow with a 80degree bend on a 1.5" raduis for the 3.5" tube. As soon as it is done, I will post pics.
The Vortech filter is WAY too small and is CRAMMED into the box...Just taking the heat shield off with a vented hood gave me almost 3HP onthe dyno, so I expect this mod to be even better.

How are they making that 1.5" bend? They just cutting and welding? Or, are they actually able to bend a 3.5" pipe that tight?

Instead of building a box, have you thought of using one of the K&N Drychargers? It's a bag that goes over your filter that supposed to repel water. You can see it on their intake page (http://www.knfilters.com/typhoon/tthesystem.html).

I don't believe the had a Drycharger that fit over the 1023 filter. I mainly want to build a box to keep the heat from the cooling fan motor and the exhaust manifold away from the filter
