Don't all S2k Diffs whine?, mine has been whining since day 1, I am up to 81,000miles, and the last 12 have been boosted, just don't dump the clutch
That's what I thought because mine does it as well. I just learned to live with it, or until something breaks I guess.

generally you can hear diffs working in every car especially at freeway speeds.

if it sounds bad to you, definitely check the fluid. chances are everyone in this thread (including me) could use a diff fluid change.

unless you do a lot of tracking or driving hard, the diff probably has a good while left on it.

When I changed my diff fluid with a synth oil I noticed it seemed to have a louder whine. Replaced the oil with LE607 and it went back to quiet. Try a thicker oil.

When you dumped the clutch you most likely loosened the pinion torque that is why it is whining. You can torque the pinion nut down some to reset the preload on the pinion bearings. Get a shop manual to see how to set preload or PM me for my number and I will walk you through the process.

Well do ya punk....do ya feel lucky???? Love Dirty Harry

Here is why your rear whined then broke ckit, bad gear to gear contact due to an improperly shimmed pinion. This rear was factory shimmed this way it was not worked on by anyone else. The pinion was not broke but, did have a few marks on it from the damage

Here is what it should look like after a new set of gears and the right shim

PM me your number so I can give instruction on helping you keep the rear in working order. If you drive it as is you may blow it all together, you are taking a chance drive the car.
