Whining/high pitched vibration/rattle, RPM dependent coming from the engine
Hi all,
I've had a problem with my 2002 S2000 for quite a while now. Several garages have had a look and don't seem to know what the issue is.
My cylinder head (the only part of the engine that sounds like the rattle through a stethoscope) makes a light rattling sound at around the 2.5-3.5k rpm mark. From the cabin this sounds like a buzzing/grinding sound that is worst at the the ~2750 RPM point in that range.
1) It cannot be heard when the engine is cold. Just before I get 3 bars (AP1) on the temp gauge you can hear it.
2) It can only be heard on throttle, as soon as you go off the throttle you can't hear it.
3) Clutch in, clutch out slightly changes the tempo. The tempo changes more dramatically and gets louder when manipulating the clutch just before, during and after the biting point whilst in the problematic RPM range.
In the first week of owning the car I ground the gears going into 5th from 4th at about 8k rpm. This caused a loud bang and the gearbox now whines. Due to the change in tempo and volume at the clutch biting point, I suspect this may be related, even though the rattle does seem to come from the cylinder head.
4) It has been like this for at least the last 6k miles.
5) Valve adjustment made no difference at all.
6) Compression is good across all cylinders, performance is good.
7) Previous owner had a new chain tensioner put in shortly before I bought the car.
At this point I think my only option is to change the clutch and put my replacement gearbox in and see if this changes the sound though I'm reluctant to do so if it is unlikely to have any impact on this noise.
Does anyone have any ideas?
