Richard Nixon was still president,
An MGB was $3,200 and the tonneau was an additional $18.00
I worked 55 to 60 hours a week for an annual salary of $5,000 and thought I was making a lot of money.

I made about $12K/year as a (young and dashing) Infantry captain in 1972. Plus jump pay. Plus non-taxed subsistence and quarters allowances. Home mortgages were well above 10% as I recall. 2018 pay scale for a captain is roughly $70K (plus non taxable allowances).

As an O-3 in 1970, I think I was making around $10.5K, including allowances, not including flight pay. Glad that the rates have increased.

'72? I was a skinny, 135 lb, 15 year old, sophomore in high school going double sessions.
Worked mornings at the grocery store ( 15 hrs) and then went to school in the afternoons. ( jr's and seniors had the mornings)
I think I was making $1.35/hr. It's funny I could blow that weeks pay on lunch now and barely notice.
All was great until I got mono.

Yep, an E1 with less than 4 months service makes over $18K now. (Up from $3400 in 1972.)

Historical military pay raises and links to pay scales.

Some interesting historical pay scales much different from today.

Sandy and I also married in 1972. December 23, in fact. Best Christmas ever that year.
