Default Frozen caliper

Who else has had issues with a frozen caliper on the S? For some reason I don't think we are alone with this issue.

We had a second one freeze up the other week. Actually is that the correct term? When they are stuck they certainly do create heat! Thankfully, we were not far from home. We let it cool down, and it seemed to free up again when we got moving. The mechanic at Rick's shop who was changing it the next day didn't see an issue.

We have now changed two out of four. I believe we will change the other two before a fall road trip.

Have you changed any? Did you change just the bad one, or all four?

Maybe it has something to do with sitting outside all winter? Covered, but .........

That could be part of it. Probably a lot of moisture build up underneath. What is actually "freezing up?" Are the sliders sticking or is it the piston. Sliders should be cleaned and lubed occasionally.

For reference:

My 2003 has 66K miles on it. It is stored in a dry garage 6 months every year. I still have the original calipers, pads, and rotors on my car. I haven't even cleaned/lubed the sliders.

Drive my '04 all year. Has 49,000 miles on it and still has the original rotors, calipers and pads. Haven't had any issues yet.

Appears you are not alone. I didn’t read down through the replies so I’m not sure if there are any real answers. Maybe Rick can find something while enjoying a stout!

I had one freeze up. Took it to Honda, when they checked, said they found another one. Had them replace all four @ ~100,000 miles

Lainey, I spoke with my “master mechanic” who I really like and trust. He was replacing four heat shields on the wife’s Subie due to noise. FWIW he said that’s been a Subie issue since 1989 that they refuse to address.

As for the seized calipers he said the first thing that comes to mind is “How often has the brake fluid been changed?” It needs to be done every 3 or 4 years and especially on cars that get limited use! Secondly, “If it was changed, did they really do a full complete job with a pressure cleaning?” It's possible to a change without doing 100% so to speak and it’s possible to change a caliper (your first replacement) without doing a complete fluid change. Other than that, he would have to see the car.

Lainey, it is important to swap and flush the brake fluid now and then.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, it sucks water out of hte air.
Brake lines and cylinders are steel and will oxidize in teh presence of water.
give it enough time and it will cease solid.

might be time for another brake meet at bills.
