How 'connected' do you want to be?

What's SMS anyhow?
Here's the Remote Desktop app I use....

I'm a Luddite at heart. I make my living from tech, but I don't want it to be a big part of my life. I've never owned a computer. (This is the company laptop I'm typing on.) Some of my audio equipment was bought when I was 17. I was the last person in my group at work to be forced to carry a pager. Then I was the last person in the group to be forced to carry a phone.
But now that I have it, the phone is always on. It hasn't been obtrusive enough yet that I've ever felt I needed a break from it. Most of my work communication is by email and instant message. Phone calls tend to be either real emergencies or calls from friends.

No answer really fits me. I carry a cell phone and its always on, I have remote access to my office computer, I receive e-mails at home and in the office and yet most of the time I don't feel like it's a burden. Most of the time I like being, or knowing that I could be, in touch.
Granted, sometimes when an abusive client won't let go or won't respect my private time, I become resentful, but the solution for me has become to get rid of the abusive clients rather than the technology. I think, in the long run, I'm better off.
None the less, I'm usually connected, or at least available, and I kind of like it that way.
I think it goes back to being a type A, workaholic, person.

....my Pioneer 737 Receiver (vintage 1980) still works; I have a 10 year old cheap CD player; my bro helped me install a new drive belt on my Technics turntable back in summer 06 (but I have not yet re-connected it

I have a cell for work, that I'm suppose to have with me 24/7, but as I get older I occasional forget it.
It's not a life or death thing.
It's not a life or death thing.
Sundenly he started puking blood, over and over. He managed to pull over and call 911 on his cell phone. Fortunately they had just implemented a service that called 911 to your call location (before that it would call 911 for your home territory).
He lost so much blood, that a delay of 10 minutes would have cost him his life. So sometimes, a cell phone is a matter of life and death.
The lining of his upper small intesines was eating through that included a large blood vessel that was behind it. The blood vessel dumped well over half of his blood into his upper small intestines. After surgery and 4 days in intensive my dad was out of trouble and still is happy and healthy to this day. They did surgecally remove 3/4 of the acid pumps in his stomach.
My frugal uncle, upon hearing this story, went out and got a cell phone the next month.

I have always thought of a flat tire or highway emergency, but the medical emergency for self or others is always a possibility. After all, we're not kids anymore and 'things happen'.....
