If your going thru wiscassett and are going to stop at reds leave yourself about 3 hours time. The lines is at least an hour long any time of the day and it grows from there. Rose and I avoid that section of Route 1 like the plague due to the notorius traffic tie-ups there.

Good point! Camden can also be "slow" but it's sure a pretty town

We're driving from Boston north thru Maine on Friday morning....mostly on I-95...unless it sudddenly gets gridlocked. Then I get off and enjoy the local towns on Rte 1 etc.

To get over to Rte 1 scenery, it's proably best to get off I-95 at Augusta and head over Rte 3 to Belfast/ coastal route

Here's the first stab at a route from Binghamton, NY to Acadia NP in Maine. MAP. I tried to incorporate many of the most applicable suggestions from Vintage and the NE Forums - and thanks very much again for all the good info. This is a work in progress and your critique is solicited and appreciated.

2 suggestions for minor detours, the first is in warren VT take a left and go through lincoln gap and back. might 10-15 miles or so.
the other is to take a left in stowe and take a run up to smugglers notch another ~10 miles.
and of course while your in stowe there is that whole ben and jerry's thing.
that's not a weekend thing though.
