So the other side of this is discussion is about music as an artform?

As Lainey pointed out early is Rap an "art form" that will last the test of time?

On the other hand there a was a newly discovered tape from 1957 of John Coltraine playing with Thelonis Monk at Canegie Hall.

One can listen here:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...toryId=4946796

It is a wonderful piece and a priceless moment in history.

That is being preserved for history by converting it to a digital format. I am sorry that I can NEVER see RAP falling into this same category.

As an aside note: I am reminded of the MTV Jock at the the Clinton Inagural ball ( I forget her name) That when Clinton played a tune by Thelonious Monk. She was quoted in Newsweek as asking who "Is the Loneiless Monk?"

As the Generation Six Version of the Internet Protocol kicks in by 2008 how will that effect the core of this thread and impact the arts?

IP G6 will provide 2200 IP addresses for every square kilometer on earth. It is estimated that by the year 2010 that every person in the modern world will be wearing no lest than five IP addressesable devices on their person.

Everything will be over TCP/IP.

The world as we know it now will change for future generations. Just like today with the way that Pod Casting is changing the face of the broad cast media, it will be a bold new world. It would be interesting to see where the world is at at the turn of the 22nd Century.
Only 5??? I'm ahead of my time....can I get a Vintage banner now?

Ummmm, will there still be pens and paper? I have no idea what this other stuff is.
yes, but they will have a ip address on them....this is really great news for you Bill.

You see since they will be on the internet, hackers are going to break into your pen and force you to write things. like "I LOVE THE STEELERS" or "I am going to write Matrix a cheque for $1,000,000.00".

Law suits are going to easily quadruple within the first few months...I see prosperous future for you....

There's been so many threads discussing the Avanti (in this very forum) over the years:

Be that as it may, I think product design (any product, not just cars) is an art form. That's why institutions like the Pasadena Art Center of Design exists, to blend art into the everyday life.

On the other side, I also consider technical design an art form. The design of a great piece of software (not what the user sees as the interface, but how that software was implemented internally) is an art. Likewise, the design of a silicon chip is also an art -- no automated chip layout software can pack a chip as dense as a human designer can do yet. But like in the audio art (music) and visual art (paintings), the design art is also becoming mechanical, we are turning out researchers who bring more "science" to the "art" of design. Now everything is driven by proofs, verification, and automation.

Slowly the artists (or craftsmen or designers if you like) are dying off and replaced by mass production and efficiency experts. But thankfully, new art forms will emerge to take their places, with a new generation of artists and craftsmen, and technology and art are really one and the same.

It is that very artistry that takes good design and turns it into great design.
