Sounds good today! We have 50 degress, raw, damp, New England weather! No top down drives this past weekend. But our trees are looking lovely!

Yes. 1500 head & block. It's home now but I still have not driven it. Got it to start and run for a very short period, so I know it turns over and holds good oil pressue. Just changed the oil and it needs a new battery. Soon I will be able to tell how strong it is. Funny thing about 1500s, some are really strong (for some unknown reason) while others are more what you would expect. It's likely I will put a 3-main MGB 1800 engine in it and other MGB stuff like 3.9 diff, disc brake, etc. Give me a good driver car, while keeping with spirit, over original any day. Never had a BRG car before. So far everything I've inspected looks very early MGA (build was Jun/Jul '56) and original and most importantly only one very small rust hole in the frame.
Dave, since you aren't keeping it original, put in a 5 main with the all-synchro box. You have to make up a cross member for it, but the cross member will also strengthen the car.

Bill, good suggestion. I know I have lots of options, in order of difficulty:

MGB 3-bearing engine with MGA or MGB 3-synchro gearbox (no frame modification).
MGB 5-bearing engine with MGA or MGB 3-synchro gearbox (no frame modification).
MGB 5-bearing engine with MGB 3-synchro gearbox with overdrive (requires frame modification).
MGB 5-bearing engine with MGB 4-synchro gearbox, with or without overdrive (requires frame modification).

I'm not totally committed to any at this point and probably won't start this until after Michigan's big national meet in July 2005. It's going to be several months before my left hand is back to normal.

One of my main considerations is NOT to firm up the suspension or ride so my wife can enjoy the car with her sensitive back condition from a horse accident.

The frame mod won't firm up the ride in any way. It will just add some stiffness to the chassis to reduce the flex. From my memory, you have to go to the outside frame rails to attch the new cross member. Get the MGB tranny mount and use that as the starting point of the cross brace. I think you have to add material to it to extend to the frame rails. If I had one, I would go with the all synchro box. Not sure I would bother with the overdrive. That would depend on my intended use. I would certainly upgrade to front disc brakes with the higher output engine.

We generally take at least one 2,000+ mile trip each summer (sometimes two or three) so I'm debating OD. However, MG engines IMO are designed to run a 4k, not 2.5k, and like it there. I'll probalbly forgo it.

B suspension mods & discs are definitely in the plan.

Looks like great fun...I do like the body painting. Of course, it does help if the lady has nice breasts.

I find that helps with or without paint.
