We voted just after 5:00 PM today. The polling station is about a mile and a half from the house. We were there and back (topless!) in under twenty minutes.

There has to be something drastically wrong with a system that can create 6 hour waits for voting. Those areas need smaller precincts or more stations. My site had about 5 tables set up as X's so up to four people could be filling out ballots at each table. There were two volunteers to check us in and two more to check us out. The streets for the ward were divided into two piles, alphbetically.

Something called jobs gets in the way of voting at those times.
Yup, sure do. There has been a lot of talk that election day should be a holiday. It is in most countries, I think. I would expect you would get a higher participation rate.

This is an easy internet application.
No anonymity, not that I necessarily know there is anonymity now but you would probably have to login to vote.

I've heard the hacking thing too. However, are the results any more at risk than hanging chads, lost ballots, and God knows what other crap is out there?
I'd be more worried about things such as denial of service attacks.

That's true. But to vote today I had to tell them my name and address, and then they gave me my personal ID code that I had to enter into the voting machine. I assume that when my selections are recorded by the machine that it's forgetting who made the selections, but I have no way of knowing that. Online voting would certainly need to verify that you are registered to vote and haven't already voted. But it could just as easily forget your selections as the voting machine I used today.

I admit that your average person on the street is more likely to suspect that their votes are being tracked by online voting than by machine voting. But if online voting is just one of the options then suspicious people can still cast paper ballots by mail.

hence why I included "not that I necessarily know there is anonymity now"
