If it was me, I would have them do a LEAKDOWN test ... a compression test is not a good way to asses this.

If you do a compression test, redoit with some oil in the cylinder ... that way you rule out rings.

If you do a leakdow, then you can pull the valvecover and intake tube and hear whether its leaking through the valve seals or the valves themselves.

Unless the valve adjustment was way off, chances of burning a valve are slight.

My 2 cents ... J

good point... a leakdown will give you a better diagnosis of any leakage relating to the valves.

i hope you're not eluding to the fact that maybe they did the compression test wrong...from what they're telling me if they dont see any problems with the valves, they will apply the cost of the tear down to the rest of the hours to find the problem. but they sound pretty sure that i have a valve issue...i mean are they screwing me? what do i do tell them to put it back together and go pay some more to have a second opinion?

hey man, I hate to be the one that tell you this, but....they just took you for a sucker.

When it comes to valve and engine block work, the only thing they know is jack sh1t. Basically, they have no idea and just charge you for rebuilding everything. And when you rebuild everything, chances are...you're gonna fix the problem. At least that's what they count on.

They tried to pulled the same thing on me couple years back. "Oh your valve is bent." "Oh we have to send it off to a machine shop." The only different is that....I say no. Did they quoted you for about $3k? Take my advice, call them up and see if they started yet. If not, send it to a specialized shop.
