You booked your room at Fontana correct? For what dates?

I think everyone in the group so far has Fontana reserved for Friday & Saturday nights. We will depart on Sunday morning.

We will stay in Dillard on Thursday night and I will post information on that Hotel in a few days so everyone can make their reservation there (working on a group rate).

unfortunately i will NOT be attending the dragon this year funds have run a lil short this year with moving into a new apt. i hope u guys have a great time and enjoy it. for those of you who have not done the dragon, worth every penny

TN Closes the Dragon Until Further Notice


It appears several rock slides in the roads leading to the dragon are causing the problems. As far as I can tell none of the rock slides are actually on the 11 mile stretch called "Tail of the Dragon" but because Hwy 129 is a 2 lane thru road the TN Governor has decided to close the dragon at the TN state line.

Apparently the NC State Police have offered to patrol the Dragon but TN has declined their offer. Could this be about revenue? TN State troopers can't get to the Dragon because the road is closed north of the Dragon. Hmmmmm

At this point we wait and see what happens but I suspect the event will still take place even if the Dragon remains closed as their are many of other great roads to drive in the area.

Javiso - thanks to the excellent salesmanship of Indyana and Primogen - I am going to the dragon solo. If you're not a complete wierdo, you're welcome to ride up there with me. I'll ask for a little help on gas, and for you to man the radio, but that's it. Send me a PM if interested.

Sadly. I'll just be getting back from Spring Break with family. Last one with my son before heading off to college (but I'll be a Empty-Nester next year). Also still tweeking the S as well as learning to drive it.

BTW, my Dad owned property in Robinsville around 1970. We used to do alot of scouting for property in his 1970 2dr Pontiac Lemans so I remember HWY 129 well.
Would get into some "spirited" driving with the locals. BIG MISTAKE! Those guys knew the road like the back of their hand, would even pass us on the curves, local moonshine might have had something to do with it.

If you registered you received an e-mail letter from Raul explaining that the Dragon is closed and may remain closed during our visit.

I personally spoke with Kalibo, Zacksdad2, Blacknot, & Captainbk about this over the weekend and all of us agreed this does not detour us from attend WTD this year.

While we would love to drive the Dragon there are many other great roads to explore and the events at Fontana put on by Airgate and his organizers are also a big part of the fun for the weekend.

I did not get a chance to discuss this with SortaRican & BelowRadar so I am not sure if the fact that the Dragon is and may remain closed will deter you from attending.

The bottom line is we are still on for this trip and it will still be a blast. If you are still on the fence about attending time is running out, registration ends on April 7th and the date for booking a discounted room at Fontana has passed. That's not to say you couldn't get a room you may be able to but I am sure it will be at a higher rate.

Regardless if you plan on attending WTD8 2010 it is still on and our group is still on for attending. If you want to join us please make up your mind soon!

Ps. I will be posting the Dillard House reservation info in the next day or so for the Thursday night stay in Dillard.
