From memory when I had some paintwork done, you are supposed to leave it a few weeks (6?) before treating the paint at all.

I am thinking of claying my car soon and wonder if someone could tell me how the clay bar is used i.e. is it just spray on the lubricant and rub the clay back and forth over the bodywork? How do you know when you need to turn\knead the clay to avoid damage. I havent done this before so any help appreciated.

NOTE
Avoid using claybar in hot temperatures unless you are very confident and adept.

This is because as part of the drying / curing process gases escape from the paintwork and these can take their time to reach the surface and diffuse away. Adding layers of wax seals these in and prevents the paint from having the exposure that is requires to cure 100%.

And of course polishing has the opposite effect and will remove teeny tiny amounts of the surface, especially whilst still "fresh" and is another definite for the 1st 6 weeks at least.
