Engine fallout
Help! my car has started stalling!
Since Premier at Northampton fitted the new alarm my car stalls itself. Press the button it starts... and then stops. Driving down the road the engine can just cut out.
The problem is solved by switching off the ignition and then putting it on again. Everything is then normal. So the problem is not massive, just a bit embarassing.
Any ideas? Should I reset the ECU? (...er how?) Or is this a sign of something more nasty?

The fact that it's happening after the alarm install sounds a bit fishy. Since most immobiliser circuits cut the fuel supply... it's possible there's a fault.
Anyway, it's easy to reset the ECU to eliminate that. There's a FQA entry on this, but all you need to do is pull the fuse marked 'backup' in the fuse box under the steering column (by the driver's right knee.). Pull it out for a minute or so then replace to reset the ECU.
The ECU seems to adapt very quickly to stalling problems - generally it'll only stall once before 'learning' round any problems. If the car still stalls, it's a case for OBD-II or Honda diagnostic equipment. You could try the alarm installer first... might be something they've come across before if it's an alarm related problem.

I had the same problem with my CRX. The Gemini alarm had been working happily for years, then for no apparent reason the car kept stalling intermittently (usually outside a bus stop full of amused onlookers
). The cause of the fault was that one of the wires in the alarm had come loose and every time it touched the bodywork of the car it cut the ignition circuit.

While I was in the process of buying my car (back in May) I did a recall check on the car through Honda's web site and they came back with an ignition switch recall that will be occuring between June and September this year.
I have not seen any mention of this on this forum yet - anyone had a letter yet?
I have the official document on my laptop so can publish details next week if this is new news!
One of the symptoms of the problem was stalling but does restart on the button - could be your issue Ade?
