If you can get the oil drained off, I can get it sampled Jamie - as can Si I suspect.
It can be checked for wear debris / metallic particles which might give a clue to any breakdown.
Not sure if you can get a mang plug for the gearbox?
On the failed one on the other thread, I have only looked at the pics but I would guess that has been caused by debris. It takes very little to start scoring rollers, and once that starts it snowballs. What caused the initial debris is what needs to be found out, but id be checking the pump and inspecting gear teeth etc.

Im scaremongering now but:
Initial debris can actually come directly from the area of micropitting. You don't need a foreign material for it to develop, simply a breakdown of film thickness allowing the plastic deformation, that is normally contrained by an elastic restraining zone below the surface of the metal, this area of plastic deformation can get near the surface and cause the damage. Gets a bit techno geeky after that though so I'll stop now.
But that could be from gears or on the bearings themselves
As always though its hard to diagnose noises over the internet. It may just be the colder weather causing a slightly different noise. Mines quite whiny but I have always heard this is normal.
The different oil could simply be a lower viscosity, this can change the noise of gearbox, hence why sawdust is used by dodgy car traders to quieten down noisy ones
The whine may well be from the actual gears running in a thinner oil
Personally I wouldn't worry about whining noises, grating noises would concern me a lot more. With the level of damage in that other thread you would certainly know about it

yes like i said the noise is there but any one that comes in the car with me realy does stuggle to hear it, so maybe just a bit of paranoia setting in after reading all this, i think i wiil put some more oil in the box like it said on the other thread to overfill a little bit.
thanks all
