I don't recall hearing any issues about the factory alarm fitted to the 04+ cars.

I definitely recall several insurers requiring a Cat 1, and a few insisted on a Tracker as well, so the problem certainly existed.
In your case you'll certainly have been asked whether or not the car has a Cat 1 alarm or not and will have been charged accordingly.
No doubt the 2004+ alarm is much better, probably because it's one system, rather than one piggybacked on another.
All that doesn't change the fact that for most people, the alarm has worked fine. It's the usual "People only post when they have a problem" syndrome - see under 2008 engines for a similar example.

Anyone ever hear a car alarm go off?

Anyone ever see anyone do anything about it?

(The cars came out of the factory with an immobilizer built into the ECU and had central locking that worked flawlessly)
Can you help us identify a more reliable alarm?

So no recommended alternatives?

UPDATE:

Drove the car over 7 days and many miles in Northern Ireland with NO further issues.
So anyone readying this thread in future - I can confirm replacing the board has solved my issue.

Good and Happy motoring everyone.
