If the black metal brackets that make the 'c' shape going around the back of the car are put back in upside down then it doesn't put enough tension on the back of the roof and the top of the glass does touch the roll hoops. The second is the straps that you refer to. They should be placed on the 2nd peg of the roof fixings for them to pull the top bar back properly into place and lifting the top of the roof again clearing the screen from the roll hoops. No idea about the new to old roof design though, didn't know there was one.
