I'd run 235/40-17 up front with either 245/40 or 255/40-17 in back. 235/40 is a better fit on 9" wheels than 225/45, and the tire diameter stagger is no big deal at all. I've run WAY more than that at the track (205/45-16 with 225/50-16) with no ill effects. Noticeably more front brake bias but not a problem.
Again, clearance difference is probably a wash since 235/40 are shorter, probably actually have more clearance with the 235/40 if suspension is adjusted to give the same front ride height as the taller 225/45, giving 0.6" more radial clearance...

This dude isn't tracking his car.

It is going to look better on the 225/45.

That he can't grasp that is beyond me.

Looks are subjective...
Speaking for myself, I'm not a fan of the look of tires that are stretched onto a wheel. 8.5" is the max recommended wheel width for a 225/45, so it's technically stretched on a 9". Not saying it won't work, just not a look I find appealing. Also leaves wheels more susceptible to curb rash...
Also I don't mind fronts being a little smaller in diameter than rears. Equal is tolerable but a little diameter stagger I find visually appealing (blame it on my Hot Wheels collection...).
And even modest reverse diameter-stagger as with 225/45 fronts with shorter 245/40 rears (which is the rear size he wants to run) I find disgusting to look at...

I'd go 235/40 with 255/40 as my first choice, 235/40 with 245/40 as my 2nd choice.

Maybe I'm just the only person in the world who is disturbed by non-symmetrical wheel gap.

Cars generally don't and shouldn't have front/rear symmetry... For wheel gap, it is pretty usual for the fronts to have a greater gap because those wheels/tires need more room because they are *steered*.

But anyway, he's going with 245/40-17 rears (no worries there), so do you prefer the front tires to be 0.3" larger in diameter vs rears, or 0.3" smaller?

I feel the same on this.

I'd just run 245/40 if I was set on that for the back.

I had an off course excursion into some bumpy grass at 40mph at a practice event and the tire did barely contact the fender lip ... luckilly not enough to cause any real damage.

Depending on your spring rate and ride height, I would shy away from a 255 with 45mm offset wheels. Maybe others have made it work, but it will be VERY close when the suspension compresses.
My car was an ex-STR car that came with 17x9 +63 wheels with 255/40 RE71R. I guess it does depend in your spring rate, but the fenders / liners on my car were untouched when I bought it and front hub to fender was about 12.0" with 850lb springs up there. It was my understanding that you guys can't touch your stock fenders so +45 offset would be a pretty risky gamble, anyway.

I'm now somewhere around -3.5* front camber and 12.5" hub to fender with 17x9 +45 across various 255/40 tires. No rubbing so far....

I honestly don’t think. 245 in the rear is a bad thing it’s being run more often than not. To me personally yes I do think a 255 is definitely better but the BS you need to deal with in making it fit is a pain and still possibly deal with rubbing issues. If I was tracking the car I would most definitely cut the liner relocate tabs Etc. but I’m not. Looking for a good symmetrical fit in the front to compliment my 245 rear. Keep in mind EVERY manufacturer’s 245/255 can vary significantly. I’m looking for an identical profile look or smaller in the front not larger. The info gathered is great ! 235/40 for the front is ordered but the ziii’s are not yet released so I still have some time if needed to gather more info and change the order till March 15th. Again I’m trying to refrain from chewing up fenders and such car is clean and would like to keep it that way. Thanks again guys I would really appreciate some pics if there out there !
