My new Evolution .....

I would guess you are willing yourself in that direction given that you just went out and spent your hard earned money on the EVO.
Being that I don't own an EVO but do have seat time in one I would disagree. The EVO is superior in terms of acceleration. But in every other measure of handling and more so quality, the EVO is well behind. It is what it is, a shitbox econocar that has all the money in the engine and suspension and perhaps 5 dollars worth in what has to be the worst interior since a mid-80's dodge.

Congrats... Why didn't you wait for the MR ?

in both cases it was me vs another "experienced" driver.... at beaverun it was the NASA ohio regional chapter president.....at summit it was someone on this board who a rollbar installed and has been to several track events.....you need to have some decent experience or they don't let you do the TIME TRIALS......... anyway.....
i also (again this could be driver) beat all of the local Porsche club at auto-x including 2 996 twin turbo's (one had x-50 package )for the street tire category....... it was my 3rd auto-x ever, so it is not like I am a vetern at that......... Long Live the Evo.

What I'm saying is that the lap times of the two cars are close enough that which once is faster will come down to the driver.
Also from what I've seen, PCA autocross is a bunch of guys that would get absolutely trashed if they actually were to come to a competitive SCCA regional Solo 2 event... but you said it could be the driver which I'd say it was. I just wouldn't brag about beating a bunch of guys at a PCA autocross.
I track my WRX and daily drive my S2000 but I've had track time in an S2000. There's no question an AWD car is easier to drive fast. However, a very good driver in an S2000 is a serious threat to throw down very fast lap times. When I had one on the track for a few hours it was so good that I felt like it did exactly what I wanted pretty much all the time. You want yaw, you got it. Brake feel is fantastic and very confidence inspiring. The EVO is an awesome car but the fact that the S2000 is so telepathic to drive and lighter weight makes it extremely fast for the kind of power it has in the right hands.
I guess what I'm saying is that it's kind of silly to compare lap times on what are basically street cars. Buying the car should be about how you feel when you drive it. For that RWD wins over AWD for me. I own both so I have some kind of experience to speak.
Nice car, btw... Evo's look awesome! Gotta agree about the ver.7 taillights though. I'd switch to them before I got the car home.

Guys,
I think I am in a very good position to comment here. I owned an '01 S2000 which I traded for an '03 Evo pending a move to VA. I love my Evo to death (tons of RMR mods, etc. ~ 300whp). I missed my S2K so much I had to get another one.
Here's the quick and dirty: The Evo is MUCH faster, handles MUCH better, brakes better, and is much more practical. Believe it or not, the Evo rides better than the S2K.
That said, the S2K is in my garage because of the peerless build quality, the flat-out fun of tearing into VTEC range, and that it's a convertible. Of course my Evo has been 100% reliable over 23,000+ miles (including some hot and heavy driving), revs almost to 8,000 rpm, and is really comfortable.
The S2000 is a great car, just built for a completely different purpose than the Evo. If it's refinement and fun, buy an S2K. If you want amazing dynamics and incredible tunability, go for the Evo. If you're lucky (I count myself as lucky), get 'em both and you can't lose!

Well, I wish Mitsu would bring the evo here so I could make up my own mind.
All I can say is that I have asked my tuning shop several times whether I should trade my S2000 in for an STI for the practicality, turbo and AWD. They keep saying that no matter what I do to the STI, coilovers, R-compounds (they typically run Bridgestone RE55S's from Japan), sways, alignment, whatever, the STI will not handle as well nor be as fun on the racetrack as the S2000. Plus, it's fugly as all sin.
While the EVO may be faster, I don't know, never driven one, it would be unbelievably hard pressed to be a more satisfactory drive.

I traded my EVO in for my S2k and drove it around for a good 3-4 months. Stock to stock, the ride quality is much stiffer. However, the interior is alot more spacious and so i guess it is more comfortable in that sense. Don't think that cause the evo is big and heavy, that it can't handle. Test drive one and it will completely blow you away. There is so much grip its unbelievable
.
