Actually, Honda might not have invented variable valve timing, but it did invent variable valve timing and lift electronic control.

VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) is a valvetrain system developed by Honda to improve the volumetric efficiency of a four-stroke internal combustion engine. This system uses two camshaft profiles and electronically selects between the profiles. This was the first system of its kind. Different types of variable valve timing and lift control systems have also been produced by other manufacturers (MIVEC from Mitsubishi, VVTL-i from Toyota, VarioCam Plus from Porsche, VVL from Nissan, etc). It was invented by Honda R&D engineer Ikuo Kajitani.[1] It can be said that VTEC, the original Honda variable valve control system, originated from REV (Revolution-modulated valve control) introduced on the CBR400 in 1983 known as HYPER VTEC.[2].

if its over-rated then Toyota, BMW, Ford, etc. would not follow in its footsteps....

which brings up the point how idiotic other fan boys always joke about vtec when they themselves are riding on something that was a spawn of the vtec king.

I prefer the continuously variable valve timing in my Porsche. It doesn't have a VTEC-like kick, but it optimizes the profile across the powerband vs. 2 discrete cam profiles like the S2000 has. Even Honda has improved it w/ i-VTEC, but sadly no love given to putting it in the F22C.

Just because someone put their own flavor to it doesn't mean they invented it.

Actually, the Fiat's early variable valve timing and even some much earlier variable valve systems were not like the Honda's system, therefore, Honda did invent its own system in its own right and patent it.

Regardless of who claimed to have invented it, Honda was undoubtedly the reason why such systems are so widely used today.

i-Vtec is not superior to Vtec when looking for performance.

iVtec = Economy Vtec. That's why the S2000 never got it.
