honda has really high rear end gear ratio's that create torque through gearing, in order to overcome low torque numbers. look at an S2K, it exerts more torque in first gear than an auto C5 vette.

Sources?

My father-in-law has a C5 auto, and I find that hard to believe.

Calculate it, it should be fairly easy, find the torque on the input shaft and multiply by the gearing ratio of first gear (2:1, 3:1, etc) to get the torque on the output shaft. Then multiply by the final drive, and then the size of wheels compared to the final drive. This model won't have friction involved though so it's only accurate to some extent. Also, you don't have to factor in the final drive and tires since you won't be accurate anyway.

at the torque comments.

Torque wins races, horsepower sells car.

Yes....because everyone needs to race through school speeding zones in SUV torque monsters to drop off their 1 brat to 3rd grade, and achieving 13-8 miles per gallon in the process...if they are lucky.

This is an S2000 site...why are we even starting threads on torque?

B/c owners are more likely to post about their cars' shortcomings than strengths.

Look at all the posts for clutch noise, top wear, gear grind, bad bumper fit, etc. vs. the # of posts just to say how great their cars are.

I'm not as likely to post "Hey, I just turned 30K miles on my S2000 w/ no problems" as "Hey, I just turned 30K and discovered a blown shock - has this happened to anyone else?".

ahhhhh you know that is too bad there pal. Perhaps if Honda gave the car more torque we wouldn't have this discussion on problems with the S!! There would be no problems because everyone would be all gollygeewillickers over the torque!
