I first thought that a Marshall had been run over by the forklift.

I'm not sure that would have made a difference. Safety car is double waved yellows too and see the comment above about Ericsson falling off behind the safety car.

Also, given the second crash happened within a lap or so, even if it had been deployed, drivers would have only had to slow to the "required lap time/speed" until they caught up with it and would have taken another lap or two.

Probably, but it wouldn't have necessarily stopped Bianci having the same accident. At the end of the day there were double waved yellows, and if the driver crashes under yellows like that then they didn't slow down enough and if he wasn't injured he'd probably be facing a penalty. If the digger hadn't been there, he might have killed a marshal.

did you notice that suttil was racing behind bianchi's car when he went off...then bianchi went off the next lap in the same place.

Thinking about it, slowing down might have contributed to it - lower speed = less down force

There'd be no point of safety cars if it were that simple.

At LeMans this year they introduced "yellow 60" zones, where if indicated the drivers had to slow and put on the pit lane speed limiter whilst passing the danger zone. That allowed the marshals to work at the side of the track without needing the safety car (or cars in the case of LeMans) and ruining the race. It's probably inevitable that F1 will now introduce stricter rules on slowing down for yellows; maybe not to that extent, but they have a time they're meant to drive to whilst catching up the safety car so I guess you could do something similar.

I didn't say it was that simple, other than the lower speed might have been a contributing factor in this case.

Does anyone know what tyres Bianchi had fitted at the time? If intermediates, then perhaps some sort of "you must use wets" instruction from race control may be introduced and I agree that they will enforce the slowing down for yellows more strictly in future.

one in a million

as Jackie Stewart sort of said on the radio this morning

no deaths in 20years and however many months since Senna's death

what dangerous sport (I think he named equestrian, mountaineering and rugby) can compare with that?

I'd add boxing, motorcycling and yachting

make the sport as risky as bumper cars and the sport itself will cease to exist
