Here you go: https://www.formula1.com/en/champion...n_gearbox.html

What the sporting regulations say:
  • Each driver may use no more than one gearbox for six consecutive events.
  • Every unscheduled gearbox change will require the driver to drop five places on the grid at that meeting.
It's in place to try to control costs (by stopping the richer teams replacing everything every race).

This sort of regulation makes it impossible to enjoy F1, that and Mad Max getting away with shoving Hamilton off the track, he got his comeuppance but nothing from the FAI?

There is a mandatory 6 events for a gearbox to survive.
I'm sure someone like LG will be along shortly with a link to the actual regulation...

But he has only used one gearbox, so if that lasts the next five races can he claim a 5 place recovery? and everyone changing a gearbox in the first six races is stuffed, that's stupid!

A low budget team is just as stuffed as a high budget one so the whole system is self defeating, especially as the low budget teams may rely or cheaper components.

You're completely wrong. Requiring teams to use the same gearbox for consecutive races forces them to build more durable units which reduces costs.

Here's a useful article from a few years back (when the limit was 5 consecutive races), but similar applies. It might help you understand, as a self-confessed "non-expert"

I was being ironic.

Wouldn't it be so much easer just to say you get five engines and five gearboxes, use them as you wish, swap then around when you want, repair them if you need to under scrutiny, but they must be the same spec. Only after you run out you get penalised, that would make a more competitive and entertaining season, something the FAI don't seem to want. One comment I got from a casual F1 watcher was "They stuffed the world champion halfway down the field, it's not worth watching now". I tend to agree.

Your idea won't work because spec changes are required throughout the season to enable engine manufacturers to fix problems with unreliability. Gearboxes are less affected by this hence the different rule. Having said that, they are allowed only 3 types of each engine element nowadays. you can read and learn about it here: https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/13...e-unreasonable.

The race was more entertaining IMO because we got to enjoy the world champion working his way up through the field.

Good second half of the race today. Top teams are close together, just a shame that overtaking is impossible under "normal" circumstances - it's very much one by one.

It looks like strategy (and track position on a safety car) is playing a big part this year. At least it's not shaping up to be a done deal again.

Danny Ric showing everyone how to get past. Max needs to learn a thing or two from his mentor..
