I probably drove that bit of Route 66 back to LA from Lake Havasu City...
Er, not unless you made a detour of several hundred miles. My photo was taken in the Painted Desert, east of Flagstaff and almost in New Mexico.

Anyway, sorry Gad, back On Topic...

most classics (of the type I'm talking about) have to survive a banger phase

that happened with e-types ...
I'm old enough to remember, but then again, maybe I'm getting too old to remember...

E Types as bangers? I wish I had known, if it were true. Can you provide examples? Not a dig, just that I am very surprised by that comment.

@Roadie: Petrified Forest end of same? Yes I know where you mean. But as you say back on topic ...

@UF: I guess that was why the OP's E39 M5 was not put in his B&Q shed. This is what wiki says
Since the start of production the entire in-car entertainment system (Radio Function, Navigation System, Television and Telecommunications systems) is based on a very flexile automotive computer system. As a result the E39 models can all be easily upgraded with the newest BMW technologies including BMW's Bluetooth System, the DVD based Navigation system, as well as BMW's CD changers that play MP3s.
Sounds ominous.

Mind you, in many cases, they are barely escorts any more - they run different engines (GM 2.0 Red Top, F20C etc), different gearboxes, different suspension, brakes etc... the only thing that's really Escort about them is the shell... and even they are highly modified...
yup, but they weren't the ones i was talking about

more the original Ford spec rally cars which fetch the big money

ps cosworth engine power is always fastest (with a few tweaks)

Indeed; how many S-Types did they smash up making The Sweeney? E-Type was no better.

They were all rusty old dinosaur tat back then. People wanted smarter 2.0 litre continental stuff post oil-crisis.

But I've heard of unmolested 2-Door Mark 2 Escort 1100 road cars selling for approaching £5K because these cars are still in demand for rallying and are becoming very rare...
And the rest...

Look at the Pistonheads classifieds.
A good Mex or RS can fetch 20k plus.

No doubt... what I'm saying is that even the run of the mill versions are fetching good money if they are solid and straight...

not many sell for that price though

lots of dreamers out there

£12k will buy you a nice RS2000 and £7-8k buys you a half decent one

Mexico's are rarer (and nicer looking imo)

best bet on the RS cars is an Escort RS Cosworth at the moment

they don't drive well compared to a Sierra though
