Unfortunately, too many drivers think that because they haven't had an accident, the overtake was safe

This is similar to the outrage exhibited by motorists (particularly motorcyclists) who whinge that someone has pulled out in front of them when they have been exceeding the speed limit

Or my personal favourite, people that enter roundabouts at ludicrous speed and hide behind the priority convention

My experience is that more overtakes are conducted in the style described by Heinz than those you describe, where the reaction is really quite baffling

I do think the national economy drive contributes though - it provides another 'excuse' for the terminally disadvantaged to express their dissatisfaction with their lives

I find getting up to speed first and then changing up a gear helps, doing it at 8500rpm really seems to aggravate them far more than doing it at half that. If the overtake is safe, you shouldn't need to be going like a bat out of hell to get past.

Indicate out ... overtake .. leave a good gap and indicate back in.

It's not our job to teach anyone a lesson either.

Agreed.

I always think a flash of the lights invites a punch in the face.

i have no issue with dawdlers per se although i think it's a bit ott doing 30 in an nsl. i'm often in a bit of a hurry i guess but that's for me to be concerned about.

but the main beam thing, that gets my goat. i think part of it could be the HKS exhaust and the K&N making the car sound a bit manic if i go into vtec but regardless i never get anywhere near the car i'm overtaking (you dont know what they will do after all as i think they lack any real concentration at that speed) so i really dont see the point.

and one day i will end up hopping out of the car and telling them what a waste of sperm and egg they are

i did get the same treatment in the vectra diesel from a van driver ffs. i just slowed down in front of him a lot for a bit to demonstrate to him why i overtook

Flashing of lights IIRC is to indicate "I am here" - therefore to have overtaken someone in a car you clearly must have known they were there as if you were not aware of the presence the conclusion would be for the overtaking vehicle to drive into the back of them. Flashing of lights once someone has overtaken you is an incorrect action, and so yes slap-worthy.

Now - how to administer said slap?

Although you make a valid point, why would anyone want to pull out in front of someone speeding? Sure they shouldn't be doing it and you may feel it's dangerous, but it's not your job to enforce the rules of the road and it is their right of way, and surely the last thing you want is a speeding motorist itching to get past you who then performs a dangerous overtake

You can laugh at them 6 miles down the road when they've wrapped their bike/car round a lamp post, or they've been pulled over by a copper.

people driving to slow for the road conditions cause frustration and annoyance to the drivers behind.

this eventually results in dodgy overtaking.

therefore its the slow drivers fault.

i remember in the highlands that there were road signs asking slow drivers to pull over and let the faster traffic past.

^this^

If you're the only two cars on an empty A-road in the middle of nohwere, the "aggravated overtake" excuse doesn't wash at all.

I find laughing at them seems to cause maximum humiliation.

As an added point, if you don't do the posted speed limit on an empty road, that's a potential driving test fail.

Best achieved by driving a Vauxhall Signum.
