Tomtom or Garmin?
I've always had TomToms.
'Er indoors has a Garmin. I really dislike the interface on it. The routes it plots are very bizarre.
It may come down to what you're used to, but I'm happy with TomTom.

I make that 7 for Garmin 3 for TT so far.
I would be adding the The PocketGPSWorld camera database to it.
I can't do without the speed camera voice alerts and it seems after a bit of digging I will need the 7## series Garmin for this as the the lower models that can't play MP3's don't have the facility to load voices.
I'll have a play with both interfaces before deciding
The brighter screen of the Garmin seems a winner in an open car though.

My 250 has safety cameras pre-loaded, and makes a "bong" sound, as well as displaying a message giving details when approaching a camera site.
It'll take the pocket GPS database too, although I've no idea how to tie it into the "bong".

I downloaded voices such as "Gatso 30mph" or "Mobile 70mph".
These voices appear on the list of sounds and you have to manually switch and set the distance from POI you want the warning to sound. I imagine it is the same procedure on the Garmin.
The PocketGPS list is updated monthly and seems comprehensive.
Voices are available there as well as instructions to implement them.
The forum is also a good source of info
I'm not sure as I generally use it with the sound off anyway. I think it keeps bonging until you pass the camera/leave the area irrespective of actual speed. The 250 is a pretty basic unit, sme of the more expensive versions may well have this ability.
FWIW I used to have a PDA with TT3 which I liked too. The Garmin felt a bit weird to use at first but I once I got used to it, it's been simplicity itself.
