Make sure you tell iTunes to sync on connect. Also make sure your iTunes library is empty. Then plug the iPod in and it should automatically delete everything off of the iPod...

Cracker this is not a recommended practice at all.
First: you will have no back up except your CDs Any loss of your iPod drive or accidental deletion (as described above) will leave you without those songs.
Second: you cannot get the music off the iPod without a third party application (kluge).
Personally I'd recommend against this strongly.

i do have just 1 more question
if i am "manually managing" my songs how can i listen to all the songs on my ipod through itunes without having to "sync" the songs in? or is there a way?

wierd, i hit play and it just starts from the beginning. since i don't have my music arranged in playlists yet i'll have to get that organized before i have some fun, i'm guessing
