I don't know the answer to either question, Mike.
I believe the owners, at this point, will strive to break the union and get some of the players on "their" side. There are only so many teams in Europe and in the Minors; the guys who were making $5 mil a year are looking at a choice between nothing (sitting), 1% of their old salary (minors), or 60-70% of their old salary (breaking the union and siding with Bettman)...

No, WSB, a lot of players (Hatch, DMac, Chelly, Drapes, etc) live in, and pay, income tax here in Detroit. Advertising revenues are a huge loss - many ad companies are on the brink because of the loss of this account.
But hey, it's economics, not engineering. WTF do I know

The fans don't know doodly about the game though. Given a year away from the game management will have to do some fancy marketting to get the fan base up again.
Do you think the NFL, MLB or the NBA cares how much the average fan knows about the sport? I think they only care about how much they spend on their products.
The Sharks are really the only thing going on in San Jose. Season ticket sales may drop a bit but I would bet the slack would be taken up by single game attendees.
Hockey will have to follow baseballs lead and turn all their prime athletes into android popping steroid hulks.. then manufacture something like a home-run contest to gain any significant fan base back. It will take out of the box creative thinking....maybe make the nets bigger and give the goalies less pads or if they could just make Bettmen goalie at every game both ends in every arena that should work

I heard this morning that the city of San Jose thinks it will lose 1.4 million bucks because of the NHL shutdown. I don't believe that entirely because people won't put that money in their banks... they'll find some other way to spend, but I wonder what the impact will be across the continent?
IF it's believed to be so high there may be a lot pressure from the cities on the owners to fold.

) For San Jose specifically, the city will only have a net loss if that money is spent outside the city so that they lose tax revenue from those $'s.On a national scale, there should be an even lower net loss (if not zero altogether). How much of the money not spent on NHL games and related activities will be spent on vacations outside of the US (or invested outside the US)? The beneficiaries of the transferred spending (from NHL to something else) are hard to identify if not impossible.
