The Semi-Official Hockey Thread...
For a team/city like San Jose, I can see that - they probably get fans from throughout the Bay area, and those fans maybe are spending their money at local establishments which don't benefit SJ. But I don't see that being as common in the smaller cities like Buffalo or Calgary.
I think the cities exerting pressure would also largely depend on who owns the stadium and what else they've been able to schedule in it...

Now we're completely in sych.
True that Ottawa and prob Buffalo would benefit by the 24%. Didn't think of that... Wonder if there will be anything like that in the final settlement. I think it was predicated on a shorter season.

Bettman has all but said the owners will resort back to their revenue-tied salary cap, which the players won't accept.

I heard this morning that the city of San Jose thinks it will lose 1.4 million bucks because of the NHL shutdown. I don't believe that entirely because people won't put that money in their banks... they'll find some other way to spend, but I wonder what the impact will be across the continent?
IF it's believed to be so high there may be a lot pressure from the cities on the owners to fold.

Oh freakin' well - off to Fraser for me
And mikey, as much as I love you, I'll respectfully disagree. The players, imho, were more than fair - the cap offered was less than the current Detroit salary. Are you going to go to work if they say you'll never, ever, ever get a raise?
I don't know the answer to either question, Mike.
I believe the owners, at this point, will strive to break the union and get some of the players on "their" side. There are only so many teams in Europe and in the Minors; the guys who were making $5 mil a year are looking at a choice between nothing (sitting), 1% of their old salary (minors), or 60-70% of their old salary (breaking the union and siding with Bettman)...

Try a minimum of 10x that loss for Detroit metro. The state alone will lose $5m in taxes just from income loss. Playoffs alone are worth $5m to downtown Detroit

Though that doesn't help all the people associated with the rink and team, and places like hockeytown cafe.
No, WSB, a lot of players (Hatch, DMac, Chelly, Drapes, etc) live in, and pay, income tax here in Detroit. Advertising revenues are a huge loss - many ad companies are on the brink because of the loss of this account.
But hey, it's economics, not engineering. WTF do I know

having said that, i'm going to see the Cleveland Barons play tonight (Minor league team for SanJose...)
Marcel Goc
Christian Erhoff (AHL All-Star Baby
)Jim Fahey
all are playing for the Barons that are currently on the Sharks roster.
I wonder if they are collecting money off their NHL contract, playing down in the AHL.

the current predicament is clearly the owners fault (or at least most of the blame is theirs!) That being said all parties need to grab fiscal responsibility by the balls here!
