Yes, please try to restore the vinyl before giving up on it. Especially new owners of used MY00-MY01 models... As was pointed out, the visible area is bigger than the glass (MY02 - present).

You should also keep in mind that Honda tried to make the S2000 as light as possible. That probably factored into why they made plastic rather than glass originally. Your top deploys and stows faster than any other convertible top in the world (~6 seconds). I find that very cool.

BTW, here is a link to a do-it-yourself thread on this subject. I can't speak for the accuracy / quality of the information, but it looks pretty good.

One of the main reasons I switched from MY00 to MY02 is for two reasons:

1. I wanted a different color
2. My top had wearholes and the plastic back window wasn't doing it for me.

Trust me...a glass top is much better and the MY02+ tops are better made than MY00-01. It's a quieter ride and it's easier to see out of. I remember those winter days when my plastic back window was fogged up and I had to drive without using the rearview mirror. I couldn't see; simple as that. On MY02 I just hit the defrost button and in less than 5 minutes, I can see out of the rear no matter how cold it is.

I recommend a glass top in all cases. But if you can't get one, I will say that Plexus works tremendously well in cleaning it up.

If your plastic is to the point that its cloudy/brownish.. its a lil past cleaners/polish.. it would need a replacement. The best cleaner/polish I've used is Plexus.

I've tried the 3M one they sell at the dealerships as well as a couple others.. Meguiars.. #13 and another one (dont quote me on this as I dont recall the #'s).. they all did nothing. So it really depends how bad yours is...

As far as the glass window replacement.. theres many users on here who have done the conversion.. however its not easy. Theres a dealership here in the bay area that charges about $1800~ for everything, parts, labor... etc.. but they don't do it.. they outsource to another place. So that kinda gives you the ballpark.

Good luck with that
Quoted.

I like the glass, not a fan of the plastic rear window. But each to his own.

Glass (to me) looks clearer and allows a better view. Plus, in the long run, won't need to be replaced as often.

Here are the instructions for converting the early plastic window cars to glass using the original frame. It's not that hard... About $950 for a new top, $20 in parts, and some labor.
