OG will match SafeRacer prices if you call them on it. That's how I got my discounts. Also, if you do decide to use SR, I believe the discount code of "A2006" still works until the end of the month.

Buying a helmet without trying it on is something most folks advise against.

If you decide to get anything from OG, ask for Jason. He was extremely polite and helpful as I really knew nothing about harnesses and "stuff."

Sept 8-9 Mazda's having a 2 day event on Shenendoah. You should come out and spectate. It'll give you an idea of how these things are run.

I'm with spazegun, get the brakes in order then run what you've got. Gfactor and the other track whores are super experienced. What's good for them isn't necessarilly good for you.

I'd probably hold off on the super till you get some real experience...

I'll try to make it out. Is it just Mazdas? If there will be some s2ks I'd love to hang out with the group a little more and watch how its done from beginning to end of the day. Like I've mentioned before I have checked out a few of these things, but it would be good to see more and more.

I agree 100% with what is good for them wont necessarily be good for me, but they also seem to have the most s2000 experience on that track so I ask them for advice. They seem to have great input for equipment to get me started so far.

The supercharger has to go in this weekend for a number of reasons. I do agree that it is not the ideal situation and might make it a lot harder for me, but it is not an option so I will deal with it.
Thanks for the input

They have a huge selection online and a great price range. I'm not sure the difference between all of them and what style im looking for, but I'll swing in and ask for some help there. I've seen everything from a $150 helmet up to $1100!!! They also have a great selection in brakes and brake accessories. Have to go there!

I find OG to be expensive. You want a cheap SA2005 helmet. I use open face because my car has airbags. I've heard rumors of closed faced helmets getting pummeled by the airbags.

I'm driving on the 8th and 9th but, I'll be in my Civic because my '2k isn't ready to debut (want the rollbar before I track it). The Mazda events will feature all sorts of cars. Most car clubs need outsiders to come in and pay to cover the cost of renting the track so, it's typically any car type.

Mazda runs a good track day. Them, Audi, Mercedes and to a lesser extent FATT are who I typically track with. 2 day events are normally cheaper per day than a FATT ($170 or so). My Karate instructor's doing one day and his father in law's doing the next with one car to split the price.

I did just install the BSK kit, took all of 1/2 hour to do. There's a drift class this sunday, I'm attending in the '2k. It'll be my first so, I'm not sure what to expect (I'll just shut my mouth and listen to the instructor).

Mike.... first of all, I should have given you a ride... didnt know how much interest you actually had in this. Unfortunatly its like twisting an arm to get a passenger in a car at NASA.... and as busy as I was when you came, I didnt really have time to get to the coordinator and request a passenger armband.

My suggestion for you is for you first track event... (this is what I did)

1. Keep your car mod free as possible. Supercharger or not, thats not that big of a deal.

2. Make sure your car is in tip top shape. Make sure your brakes are bleed and fluid clean. (I use ATE blue that I change every 1 or 2 events, but my first event was on bleed stock fluid) Make sure your oil is clean and topped off, your tires have good tread on them, you brakes pads are newer.

3. ESPECIALLY for your first event run with a good group with good instructors. NASA or FATT if your going to summit. FATT is pretty much full, but you can register for group 1 at the NASA event in october. Carguys is also a good group as well.

4. Focus on your next track event, in this case your first one. Dont get overwhelmed with ways to prepare the car, etc. The main goal is to have fun. I have a picture on the wall of my first track day while passing an identical red S. I still smile everytime I look at that picture... I honestly did it right, I went out with a car in perfect shape, totally stock and just had fun. Thats my suggestion for you.

Since then ive spent way too much money and still have fun... but all these high performance parts like 12 dollar brake fluid, 300 dollar purpose only brake pads, 700 dollar tires, 650 dollar sway bars, race seats, rollbars, coilovers, etc... shouldnt even be on your mind.

before I even got started a season racer and instructor that I met at my church in highschool told me..
"Cars come and go.... you can spend a fortune on them. But the money you spend on yourself will stay forever. The best mod you can do to your car, isnt material."

basically, learn to drive it first.

Thanks Cale. You really don't have to worry about being busy. You were there to do your thing and I completely understand. I was glad I got to hang out with you guys for a few minutes and I honestly had a great time just watching. (however if anyone could take me for a ride in the future I would really appreciate it)

I think I'll take your advice and just make sure the car is trackworthy and not worry about track parts and upgrades for the first couple attempts. I'll make sure my brakes are good and such and just enjoy it. I'll have to make sure I can get a friend to come with and take pictures

I would look to spend <500 for a helmet. They all get pretty stinky at some point anyway.

Tip: don't put your helmet back in the helmet bag right after wearing it unless you want mold to start growing. Let it dry first (I leave mine upside down for a few minutes after each run).

Bottom line: remember its not a race, since you are a novice: you suck (seriously but don't take it personally we all sucked at first) listen to your insructors and start off slowly (gradually building up speed) and finally just have fun. If you do that, chances are you will have fun, learn a lot and you will be able to driive your car home.

If you want to see a worst case example of what a novice driver does in a too powerful of a car (while early apexing darn near ever turn) watch this:
