In my neck of the woods (So Cal), AT&T has the best coverage area. Their plans aren't as good as some of the others, but I get a good signal almost everywhere I go.

A rumor that is almost certain.. is that cingular and att are trying to get in bed...

Out in the midwest, they are joining together building their new GSM towers... and why would two enemies want to do this? hmmmm..... so when they get together, it would be a simple transition for their customers..

will be interesting to see what happens...

AT&T is actually going to be pulling out TDMA service very shortly ... rumors say that equipment replacements might be given to those who have non-GPRS handsets.

AMPS and GPRS are their current "most profitable units", but they are loosing too much money on TDMA.

Im kind of wondering how AT&T plans to switch from TDMA to GPRS so quickly, but maybe something else is in the works.

AT&T has roughly 19 million customers. IF they gave away a free GRPS phone to every customer.. that is almost 2.85 billion dollars just on phones.

The buildout of towers will be around 2 billion industry leaders say. And the time it takes to convert TDMA to GSM is going to take a while. You can just pull something on the switch and insert something else to get GSM. The total cost is going to run in the billions.

When GTE/Bellatlantic/primco merged, it cost us a lot of money just to intergrate the different billing systems, and the multiple networks.. and we were all CDMA. just imagine what is going to happen just trying to switch from one type of system to another.

Thats like asking us to pull our engine, and go from gas to hydro. It can be done, and it is going to cost a lot of money, but would it perform the same....

Ok.. enough of me talking cell service.. i better stop before Airgate comes on and says something...
