Default Del Sol VTEC

I've always been curious about this car. Who's actually had or have one and can comment on how fast it is, etc.? Did they only make if for one year? If so which year was that?

I can only answer one of your questions: They made the DelSol VTEC in '94, '95, '96, and '97. I'm sure someone else will pop in and comment on how fast it is.

I used to sell Honda's back in 95-96 and my Aunt also purchased a Dark Green Del Sol VTEC. It was quite fast. Imagine the new Civic Si motor in that tiny frame. It was 160 hp and weighed nothing. I don't have exact numbers, but she used to claim she could keep up with a lot of the big dogs and she has quite the lead foot. We usually only had one of them in inventory and we barely ever had cutomers wanting to shell out the extra cash over the Si model. Beside's hers, I'm not sure that I've ever seen another VTEC Del Sol on the road.

I own a 95' Si. A friend had an 95' VTEC, and it is no question faster then the Si. They are fun little cars, simple layout, good seats, plenty of trunk space, and a hardtop...until the "Weakest Link" chassis goes south. The Civic platform was never designed to be a open top, and i've spend BUCKS trying to improve the handling and rigidity. Ultimately the parts i added out muscled the chassis...and the every joint you can name is making noises (the Z3 chassis by comparison feels stiff...that tells you something about delSol).

By the way, the great misconception of delSol being a smaller and lighter car than the (92-95)civics. True, it has a shorter wheel base, but WRONG, it is couple hundred pounds heavier than the civics for all the reinforcement materials they wielded on to the chassis...(the current Civic Si Coupe however is a tad heavier)

Hope this helps

Beware of the "sleeper" del sol vtec. I remember when the del sol first came out. We were all laughing at how small and wimpy the car looked. There were 2 very cute girls cruising around in one, so we thought of it as a chick car too. Then they floored it and it just flew. That sure shut a lot of us up.
