my school is bad with policies, no offense to the kid but I'm not stupid like that. when my mom called me from school I polietly asked my teacher if i could answer because it was my mom.. my teacher was a little nervous but he said ok as long as its short. he sent me to a corner in the room so i wouldnt disturb class and spoke to my mom because I thought it would have been an emergency.. so it all depends on how you handle it.

ok i'm a sophomore in a public high school.

the bladder issue, whatever. there are so many people who abuse it in certain classes while they know not to ask in others. some make up excuses like "it is right before lunch so i have the need to go!" every single day.

i myself have only gone to the restroom during class once and it was the day before winter vacation where we did nothing. i understand if you really need to go, but if you really need to go at the same period every single day...

i just believe the teacher is there to teach and if i don't like him or her or they way they teach, whatever. he or she comes to teach every day just like i go to school every morning and teaches. i figure i might as well learn from them.

as for the cell phone issue, most of the teachers at my school are ok with it. if it rings they politely ask for it to be turned off even though the rules say you must confiscate the cell phone and have the parent pick it up. i have only had one teacher do that to someone in 2 years.

one day i forgot my cello and i needed it in 15 minutes for a orchestra festival. i went up and asked the teacher if i could go to the corner and call my dad to bring it for me. haha he's a very sarcastic man so he said "ok fine WHATEVER just go to the corner and keep your voice down" and laughed. i think if you ask somewhat politely a quality teacher WILL let you talk if you have a semi-good reason to.

The idea that just because your situation isn't pleasant gives you the right to be rude is a fundamental flaw in society.
You're right, I mean what was the mother thinking? How dare she be rude and call her kid during his lunch break at school! Next time, she should yell out "Hey terrorist bad guys TIME OUT on the shooting and roadside bombs, its my scheduled time to call my kid back home!"

I doubt she's calling between dodging bombs. None-the-less the rules still apply to everyone.

Rules are meant to be broken, especially when they are useless and made by worthless public school administrators.

Some things are important enough to divert that kids attention for a few minutes from school (especially lunch).

You have to agree that people serving in wartime don't get to pick and choose when they call home very often. I think everyone in this country owes it to them to give them at least the satisfaction of speaking with their family, when they are finally able.

Not having been there, the kid may have acted like an ass, who knows but those who were there. But are you actually arguing that the kid should have just said, "Hey mom, can you call back, I'm still at school, and I'm trying to eat" ?

Learning in public schools is bull crap. Teaching is more of a baby sitting job now more than ever. I did not learn one important thing in my educational career until I got into my first semester of real school.

In this case, the kid was at his lunch break. Taking a call from his mom in Iraq doesn't hurt him, his learning or anyone else.

And you're assuming too much. Learning in public school?

I'm arguing that he has no business having a cell phone in school at all period. Why because children lack the personal responsibility/judgement that adults have. This isn't a rocket science level observation.
