Kid suspended 10 days
I'm not putting words in your mouth you came up with two insidences and i politly informed you that those two insidences were not reflective of the nation wide situation.
I understand the media sensationalism of the situation but that doesn't change the facts. I too would've thought that school violence was up but I was checking gun violence stats and came across these, that's how I knew the situation is being blown out of porportion.

Besides its a shot of a beautiful woman in a non nude and I think non suggestive pose. She's messing with a VCR!
OK, now I'm just projecting my thoughts.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Dude can you email me some pics of that hot chick?

The real scary thing about this thread is that I am tending to agree with excel on many of his points. Maybe I'm just too old, but I don't see why any kid needs a cell phone at school. At least the school allows you to have them, just not turned on (sounds perfectly reasonable to me).

That being said, however, everyone seems to be arguing about the morality or whatever of certain school policies. Feel too locked down by The Man? Leave the school/city/state/country or justify why you think it needs to be changed. There are forums and channels to revisit and revise all these policies all the time. Sure, you'll need to talk to your Congressmen to get federal policies changed, but if you are bent out of shape over local stuff you can get your voice heard. Present your case. Make a statement.
Cell phones certainly do offer positives such as being able to keep in touch with loved ones at all times, but on the flip side cell phones offer too many distractions in the classroom. You don't even need to call someone to talk to them. You can text message all day long and not ever know what's going on in class.
There's almost always more than one side to these issues and that's a good thing to promote discussion to really figure out what is the best solution at the time.
No doubt he should've been able to talk with his mother in Iraq.
No doubt being suspended for 10 days for such an infraction is ridiculous, which is why he got suspended for mothing off!
No doubt his mothing off had to be quite extensive to get this type of punishment.
The middle ground? If parents need to contact their children during school hours they should call the office just like our parents had to.

Arguing that the kid should have been able to talk to his mom, for the SOLE reason she's fighting for this country has no evidentiary or factual basis. Rather it is the sole reason that she's fighting for the country where the majority of responders are basing their arguments on and this is appealing to their patriotism. In addition most of the responses that TRY to give evidence appeals to facts and evidence not relevant, or extreme to the point that is it an absurd to consider it analogous, or generalizations from extreme cases.
By the way, I'm very glad she's doing this for country. My final verdict on this one is that I'll go half liberal, half conservative.
