Does anyone know how to get a title for a car you purchased but do not have the title for? I bought a truck from a guy that was moving away but He couldn't get the title because it was already boxes up and loaded on the truck and couldn't find which box it was in. So I bought it but don't have the title, so how do I go about getting the title for it?

You could try MS's DMV. After you give them the VIN of the car, there will be all sorts of questions as to how you have ownership of the car when it is titled to someone else in their records. However, part of the deal should have been the transfer of the titles. What if he can't find it?

Whoa, did you get anything in writing saying that a transfer of ownership took place? Preferably in front of a notary? If not, you have incredible trust and faith in this individual to do the right thing. He can easily claim you stole the vehicle and you'd be in big trouble. How do you even know the title is clean? Hell he could have sold you a stolen vehicle for all you know.

But that's worst case scenario. As for the title you can't get one, because guess what? According to the state you aren't listed as the owner, not until the old title has been signed over by the previous owner. You need to take that to the DMV and then apply for a new title in your name. So until then, you can't register the vehicle or get plates in most states. Which in turn means that you might have a hard time with insurance. Good Luck!

As for if he can't find it, he can apply for a new one if he is the current owner and then sign the new one over to you. But it's still all one big headache.

It is a PITA if you dont have the title to get it registered to you. Then if he dont have the title, you have to hunt down the owner and hope they dont want it. If they do....bye bye truck. And you wont get your $$ back.
