Okay...thanks.

You saw that 42" one too - I think that one is the winner if it checks out okay...

The daytek plasma is only standard definition, just FYI (852 x 480).

A couple of weeks ago they had a 50" Samsung HD DLP for $3K less the $500 coupon but the possiblity of the "rainbow effect" scared me off.

That rainbow effect is bizzare. A lot of people have no issues with it, but I see it immediately.

I think once DLP uses more than one colour wheel, it'll be a decent technology.

'K, I just got back from Costco and BestBuy. That Daytek LCD really does look fantastic.

We first went to the south Costco store and looked at both Daytek LCD and plasma displays along with a JVC 32" LCD and a bunch of Samsung plasma displays. All were running component video feeds into them, broadcasting a Bell Express View demo (the JVC was playing a Starwars cartoon off a DVD). The plasmas a Costco all looked poor next to the LCDs. All of the plasmas had about half the horizontal and vertical resolution of the LCDs and it showed. The LCDs were also WAY brighter. I was stunned by how bright the LCD displays were.

The Daytek plasma by itself and next to some of the rear projection LCDs looked great, but it paled next to the LCDs (the JVC LCD was right next to the Daytek plasma and the comparison was no contest).

I didn't notice any ghosting with either LCD. At first I thought there was, but then saw that the plasma were doing it too and it was because of this panoramic video shot done from an airplane flying through a valley. The quality of the video itself was questionable.

They had 7 unopened LCD boxes on the floor, and three pallets of 6 boxes each up on a high shelf that we could see (25 sealed units).

We then went to BestBuy to check out some Sharp and Toshiba LCDs. There was one row of CRTs and a lone Sharp LCD that were all being fed by coax cable. That was possibly the worst video signal I have ever seen. The LCD looked awful. The CRTs looked just as bad. When the signal is bad, the LCDs look to show the brutal truth about the signal and show all its inconsistencies (much like a high end audio speaker and a crappy recording). The CRTs just got blurry and grainy. I know the signal coming into my house from Shaw looked way better than that, so I hope never to see that in my living room.

The other larger LCDs again I though looked better next to the plasmas when fed with component video signals. There was some golf on and the LCDs looked brighter and sharper.

I did see the Panasonic plasma and it blew the Daytek plasma out of the water. That Panasonic looked good. But I liked the Sharp 37" LCD better. The 32" Toshiba LCD was really bright and had a fantastic picture.

Off axis response of ALL the plasma and LCDs were incredible. You really can go 170 degrees side to side. It was almost like looking at a CRT.

Overall, I learned today that I wouldn't buy a plasma after seeing the LCDs. I liked the LCD picture better. The plasmas certainly have a size advantage, but if your looking for a 32" flat panel, LCD all the way. And any kind of rear projection is crap next to these new plasmas and LCDs.

Dave, you really need to goto Costco and see this for yourself. Costco has an incredible return policy. You can bring it home, watch it for a week and decide if you are going to keep it or not. Membership has its privileges. I plan to get one on Saturday, play with it for the weekend, and go back on Monday to either get my money back or get my $200 rebate.

I did get a couple of coupon books with the electronics coupons in them. Dave, if something goes very wrong and you can't get one, I have a copy here with your name on it.

I snapped some photos and uploaded them to my s2ki album:

There a few shots of the Daytek LCD from a far and up close plus a couple showing the side and back. There is also one of the Daytek plasma up close to show the pixels. Some of these are at full resolution so watch out!

Chris.

So a flat panel LCD is way better than a rear-projection LCD? Any idea how big you can get a plat panel LCD?

Ha ha, yeah $10 grand for a TV. That's why I'm getting a rear projection. I need the larger size for my room. Brightness won't be a problem because it will be a fairly dark room (unlike the lighting at Costco) and it's a home theatre set-up, so no worries about off-axis viewing.

Did you play with the settings at all in the store? Display TV's typically have the brightness cranked WAY up.

Yep, way better. I've got a rear projection LCD and it sucks with anything except HD.
