The Daytek box is not as thick as that Magnavox box. It looked like it would probably fit in the passenger seat.

That Magnavox looks nice! $999 US? Thats $1250 CAD, $50 less than what we'll pay for the Daytek. Manufacturers are getting the message that $3000+ for a 32" TV is NOT acceptable for the general public.

Dylan is right about the cable off to the right on the back of the TV. The three way component video cable disappeared behind a removable plastic cover. All the component in/out jacks are probably hidden behind there. Unfortunately, the TV was up on a shelf away from prying hands, so I couldn't pop the cover off to see what was all in there.

I didn't notice any vertical banding on any of the LCDs I looked at today either. Those two full screen shots and the one closeup didn't reveal anything either for the Daytek.

Well, I spent some time at Costco and Visions today just staring at these things. The more I watch them, the more I'm convinced that I will not be happy with a 32". Where I have my 36" TV now, a 32" would be like taking a step backwards even if it is a flat panel TV. I'm going to look at the 40" Samsung some more but due to it's horrendous price, I may end up with a 42" plasma. The Daytek 42" plasma has its speakers on the sides. This makes it too wide to fit on the wall where I plan to put it. I haven't eliminated the Daytek 32" LCD but the search continues.

So, I picked up one of the Daytek 32" LCDs and brought it home yesterday. So far so good. I've got a Denon DVD player with progressive scan patched in with component video, a regular Shaw cable box and a super VHS VCR both patched in with S-video, a coax cable hooked up to the LCD tuner, and a widescreen computer patched in with a VGA cable. The DVD, Shaw, and VHS are all actually switched through a Denon receiver. The coax and VGA are connected directly to the LCD.

The TV came with a remote and batteries for the remote, an AC power cable, a manual and a warranty card. The stand was already bolted to the bottom of the TV right out of the box. I got to pop that cover off the back to see the A/V connectors, and there were a TON of jacks back there.

The picture looks great, and the brightness level is perfect for the room I've put the TV in (the room is bright!). The DVD and VGA pictures are amazing. I finally get to flip the switch on the back of my DVD player to turn on progressive scan. What a difference that makes. The color is great. I think the blacks really do look black. When I looked at S-video and coax signals the first time, I thought the picture was a little grainy. But, the menus has a few options to turn the sharpness down and that made the picture look much better. For the most part, I don't notice any ghosting. Only when a busy looking scene is panned over very quickly, do I see a little ghosting, but it has to be the ENTIRE screen for that to happen. (in fact, I'm watching AMA Supersport racing right now, and I've never seen the racing look so good!)

So, the plus's that aren't so obvious when in the store:
- the brightness is great, and the Daytek has a built in photo-sensor to automatically adjust the brightness when the light levels in the room change.
- the computer connector supports 1280x768 resolution. I hooked a widescreen laptop up to the VGA connector, and the computer picture was excellent.

The not so goods:
- there's a function to change the aspect ratio (the ability to stretch or zoom the picture to fit a 4:3 signal into the 16:9 screen). Unfortunately, the TV won't remember different settings for different input sources. I'm constantly changing it as I flip between different sources.
- the TV SUCKS at channel surfing if the tuner is an external source (like a Shaw box). When you turn a channel on the Shaw box or VCR, the TV temporarily loses the video signal lock and has to re-sync itself. This take a little over one second. Surfing is SLOW!! It's a good thing that I'm used to this already, Shaw is slow too and I've trained myself to use the Shaw interactive menu instead. The TV tuner in the LCD is pretty quick (not lightening fast, but fast enough). It you channel flip, this TV will drive you nuts.

As for the sound, I can't comment at all. I turned the TV on and turned the volume down right away. I've got a set of 200 lb Paradigm Studio 100 towers, so there's no way I'm using a TV speaker.

A few more pictures:

I've concluded my search and have purchased one of these:

What started out with a simple question led to a very informative and educational thread. I'd to thank everyone for all the terrific information and help posted here.

WOW!! That's an impressive TV!! Nice work! I loved the size of the 40" Samsung and 37" Sharp, but my budget just didn't allow a TV of that size. You'll have to post some thoughts.

Are you viewing Shaw's HD channels? Now that I've got an HD TV, I want better (and widescreen format) content. I'm now looking at what Shaw offers (and what they don't offer; I see what Dylan was talking about when comparing BEV to Shaw on HD stuff; it's almost no contest). I may spring for an HD tuner. Whether that'll include a PVR or not, I'm not sure. It very well may, since I can't get a PC to record HDTV. The best I can do is a S-Video signal.

I haven't been viewing the Shaw HD channels because there wasn't much to see. Here's the listing from Shaw. The (6) HD channels are at the bottom:
http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/ProductsServices/...annelsInMyArea/

I decided that this TV can double as my computer monitor as well and may very well be the last TV I own in my life (60,000 hour average lifespan). I may never view HDTV to any extent but I figured it would be real nice for watching DVDs. Yes, it was extravagent, but what the heck.

Samsung only released these to Canada in April and so far, dealers have only received display models. Mine had to be ordered from the Vancouver distribution center for Visions. I won't see it for at least 2 weeks.

Now, all I need is a cable with DVI on one end (Shaw PVR box) and HDMI on the other for the TV.

Dave, if you have an HD box, HD is free.
