Are 3 small woofers really better than big one?
i had two 10's at one point in my crossfire (perfect acoustics in that car, bass fires right off the glass of the hatch into your ears, i loved it) and switched to 3 6's of the same brand and the 6's hit a good 3 times harder than the 10's and had a more dynamic sound to them (different bass tones at once, layered bass etc.) go with the 6's. its really all about acoustics and box design.
edit: also to be fair the tens were in a generic box and the 6's were custom, but still would have hit better even with a generic.

^you can NEVER compare subwoofer sound impressions in different cars! Every car has different acoustic values so that just does not work.
I've used tons of different brand subs over the years but ever since HS, JL Audio has never failed me from their 1st gen to their current line-up. Along the way I used MTX, Kicker, Pioner, Kenwood, Alpine, Hi-fonics, and many other brands I probably left out.
After a few weeks of trial listening, the triple 6" woofers hit pretty hard and easily performs like the single 10w6. (both in custom boxes of course). Trance music is tight and well controlled while rap has excellent punch to it. I've played it to about 90% of the max volume as that is the most my ears can handle. Honestly anything over 80% is already dangerously loud. For daily driving I'm around 50-70% which I think is plenty for any car guy.
Can I make it louder for less money? Sure but it will definitely take up more trunk space and custom work you can't put a price on
