Adding an iPod
anyone added an iPod to their S yet?
I have a 3rd gen 30 gig iPod currently using through a cassette adaptor, I'd like to have it hard wired in for power and audio but have no idea how to.

You have a cassette player in your S?
Basically you need a converter that allows you to plug the ipod into the aux input on your HU. If you have an aftermarket HU, you might have an RCA input and then all you need is a cable from Radio Shack (Or the british equivalent.) Otherwise you need a Hon-aux adapter. There are a lot of threads on these, I don't have one so I can't help too much.
Once you hook up to the back of the HU you would run the wiring to where you want the iPod. People seem to be putting them in the glove-box. So you would run the wiring through the center console and up into the back of the glove box. (Rick's website has a great article on getting into the center console (look for the console cover isntallation instructions.) http://www.ricks2k.com ) Power is a little trickier as I have not seen a straight accessory cable that would plug into the accessory outlet. Most I have seen are coiled. However, you would want to splice that into a power source.
It is a very cool idea, but a LOT of work.
They also make FM modulators that allow you to "broadcast" your own radio signal, then tune it in over the radio. These are pretty worthless in my area as there are too many radio stations taking up ALL the possible frequancies. If you are away from large metro areas, you should be fine.

I plan in installing my iPod to the right of the console right next to the dash. I want it easily accessible so that I can make changes while on the road. The other option is in the glove box but I want to be easily accessible.
Here is the mount I plan on using:

I also want to power the iPod via the firewire port using a 12V adaptor that I plan on splicing underneath the dash. Here is the unit I'm looking at:
http://store.yahoo.com/lovemacs/0019844.html
I also want to connect it to my Alpine 9811 head unit via the AUX connector that has two RCA plugs. Here is the cable I plan on using:
http://store.yahoo.com/lovemacs/xwrca02.html
The challenge will be in mounting the bracket to the console. I will have to get creative. I might screw in a metal plate to the console and then mount the bracket to that. Not sure how it's going to turn out.
Cheers,
Ismat.
