The V1 is permanently upgradeable through Valentine. A friend of mine makes/sells the H.A.R.D system for motorcycles and has to test radar every year, and goes to a few summit meetings on the subject. He uses a V1 as well. In my 4 years with the V1, I have received a couple of tickets. One ticket was because a cop was pacing me, not using radar. The 2nd was when I was on one of my bikes and got something in my eye, and was trying to slow down to exit. Other than that, the V1 has saved me thousands of dollars in fines. I'd bet 3-4k in tickets. It works.

I would say no, you are far better off to shut off the car, roll down the window (if up), and put both hands on top of the wheel and wait for the cop to instruct you do anything else (like get out license and registration). Cops are vulnerable when approaching a stopped car - they don't know if you are a killer on the run or just some dude driving too fast. You start reaching, moving, grabbing, and stuff in your car while the cop is approaching and he/she could get real nervous. A nervous cop is not a happy cop - so your goal is to make sure they know they have nothing to fear from you.

Cop: License and registration please
You: My license is in my billfold, let me get that out for you
You: My registration is in the glove box behind my elbow, let me get that out for you

If you have a detector visible, then they figure you are a scofflaw and they finally got you - so the cop is not likely to let you slide. I run with one anyway, and if they get me fair and square then they get me.

i couldn't agree more....

i had a good college buddy of mine who's now a cop in Houston. he took 2 bullets to the chest on a traffic stop. thankfully, he was wearing his vest. he's told me if you start moving around, you're asking for more trouble and potentially getting into a dangerous situation. calm, polite, and non-threatening behaviors are your best options.

i've even had a police officer i know tell me to roll down the window and put both hands on the window sill or partially out the window. my buddy has said to roll down the window and visibly put your hands on top the steering wheel with open palms. all have said to always ask permission before moving or getting anything.

a couple times i've been asked by the cop why i'm keeping my hands visible, asking permission, moving slow, etc. i tell them about my buddy in Houston, and that i want them to know i'm complying, want them to be comfortable, and that i don't want any trouble. they are usually very appreciative of it. *cough* warning *cough*

the worst thing you can do is jump out of the car or start digging around.

and i've had cops see the detector and still give me a warning...

The thing is you gotta be quick, i have both the V1 and the 8500. Both are mounted
on the sun visor. Its very easy to reach up and take it down and put it under the seat even before you stop. Both mine are hardwired so the cord is out of sight.
And with them being mounted of the visor the are hard to see especially in the S.

My 2 cents worth

I think it depends on the circumstances - when I posted not to be fiddling around in the car I was serious.

OBVIOUSLY if you have time before you stop to get it off the glass then you should do this. Say you pass a stationary cop and he zaps you, you see the blue lights come on. You will have several seconds before he gets fired up and gets behind you. Slip it off the glass and toss it behind the seat. Then you are not messing about when he is behind you or has you pulled over.

XR7 Laser Jammer and a beltronics vector LR. I have never had any problems with either unit. I still get more warnings than tickets even with the stuff in plain sight. If any of you guys ever come to UGA, DO NOT SPEED IN ATHENS. THe fines are gross.

A good coat of VEIL and a Blinder M40 is your best defense against laser.
