Building a system for my S2K
You keep saying you want a powerful amp, but something small. You aren't comfortable with Alphasonic, you aren't sure about Audiobahn. You keep coming back to the JL (which isn't bad, but kinda pricy).
Lets look at a few specs ok?
JL 500/1
500x1@4ohm, 500x1@1.5 ohm
9.25" x 2.37" x 13.4"
MSRP $600
(MMATS amp I recommended)
MMATS D1000.2
250x1@4ohm, 700x1@1ohm
9.5"x 2.25" x 6"
MSRP $489
(MMATS amp I will be installing)
MMATS D1500.2
350x1@4ohm, 1100x1@2ohm
9.5" x 2.25" x 8"
MSRP $699
Audison LRx 1.400
350x1@4ohm, 900x1@1ohm
7" x 2.2" x 14.5"
MSRP $729
US Amps DE-1000
1000x1@2ohm
9" x 2" x 10"
MSRP $669
Xtant 6.1
300x1@4ohm, 600x1@2ohm
15.87" x 1.87" x 9.25
MSRP $599
Zapco 500.1
360x1@4ohm, 500x1@2ohm
2" x 7.5" x 12.5"
MSRP $499
Other than Brax, Soundstream's Tarantula series, and Eclipse amps, these are what I would install in my vehicle. The prices are not cheap but reasonable for the performance the amps deliver. Any of these amps should power any sub you would care to install in that tool-wel, and will provide enough reserve to keep the amp running cool.
Every June, Car Audio and Performance publishes a comprehensive guide to auto audio. Amps, subs, coax, components, head units, video monitors, cabling, etc. It has specs, prices, etc. for all the major and many of the minor players. That issue is on newstands now. I'ts $5. I suggest you go pick it up, and have a look through it. Highlight things you're interested in, and give a shout back here to see if anyone has experience with the stuff.
Have fun!

I trust the JBL and have heard good things about them. That is something I would definitely consider for a sub amp.
Yes, part of me gravitates toward certain brands that I have come to know and like from my own personal experiences and what I have heard from others.
My brand preferences include: Alpine, Audison, MB Quart, Focal, Clarion, Eclipse, JL Audio, Boston Acoustics, Kenwood, JVC, Kicker, Polk, Oz Audio, Soundstream, Phoenix Gold, Zapco, MMATS, Rockford (some), McIntosh, and a few others (like JBL, some Sony and Pioneer depending on what it is).
So I'm down with the JBL for subs. Any others?
And don't we need to know what type of sub before we settle on the amp to power it???

Although I 100% agree that those are all quality amps youve listed....they are just overkill, and arent really worth it in the s2k. a 700 dollar subwoofer amp for an s2k really isnt necessary. The JBL for instance, puts out a good amount of power, for under 300 bucks. For what he needs, I think thats perfect. Also, another problem is that a lot of those amps give great power, but at 1ohm. Not many subs that are SQ oriented can take 1ohm. The only one Ive had experience with is the last model Soundstream Tarantula T2-10. Its a great sub, so if you want grab that instead of the eclipse...save a few bucks as well.
In looking at 10" subs that are 1ohm you've got several choices:
That Tarantula looks like its been superseded by the T4-10.
800w RMS/ 1600 peak
MSRP $329
However, my specs show that sub as a dual voice coil with 1 ohm each. So he's either going to get 0.5ohm or 2ohm.
The Orion H2 10.2
2000 w RMS / 2500 peak
MSRP $699
(I'm not saying this is a good option)
Treo's TSX 10.22
325w RMS
MSRP $230
Now having said that, if he decides to do with the MMATS amp, he doesn't have to get the 1ohm version. MMATS makes each of their Class D amps in a config that puts out the same wattage at 1 ohm, 2 ohm, and 4 ohm. The only difference is what resistance the amp is stable to. He could EASILY get a dual 4 ohm sub to get to a final 2 ohm resistance, and use a 2 ohm stable amp. In fact, that is what I would recommend. I'm not sure that option exists with the other amp manufacturers.
One thing I can guarantee, is that you will NOT say the MMATS amp is down on power!
Since you're going to revisit the subs, I have to toss in the possibility of the MTX 9500 series. I mentioned once before that I was damn impressed by it, and from the reviews I've read, so are the critics. It's on my shortlist, but I think it's too big for my application. So on my personal shortlist are the Adire Brahma, RE XXX, MTX 9500, and the Eclipse on the low end. I've heard the last 2, and I've read and heard from enough people I trust that the first 2 are top notch.
I think you're going to have some fun now!
Oh, and since that shop is authorized to sell MMATS, find out about the MMATS SQ4150 amp. (150x4 @ 4 ohm, 350x4 @ 2 ohm, .002 THD at rated power, 107db signal to noise). Its not cheap, nor is it particularly small.. but wow!
