Cannot auto start...WHY

Correct, and it's the most annoying thing in the world. If the convenience of remote start is THAT important to you, fine, but my friend has it on his car, and I would rather stab my eyes with pencils than having to do that everytime I get out of the car.
90%+ it's set when I do my normal routine. If it doesn't set, I usually don't care enough to go through the motions of setting it... this may change when it gets colder.
Basically, I pull into a parking spot and pull the ebrake. Then I turn off the ignition.
That's it.
My personal habits include not releasing the brake pedal until the e-brake is up, so it works seamlessly for me.
What was your friend having difficulties with?
Put the key in the ign (do not turn the key) and try to remote start the car. If the car starts then the issue is with your Immobilizer bypass module.
If no start: turn the key to the "on" position and try to remote start the car. If it starts then the issues is with your ignition harness wiring. (large gauge wires).
If the car still does not start then either your purple and green starter wires are backwards or not connected correctly or a fuse is blown on the brain's main harness

I have the same set up and that's all there is to it. Park the car, put on the e-brake, then shut it off and get out. The engine keeps running until you shut the door to ensure that it is not in gear. There really are no extra steps than you would take when normally parking the car.

This is ALWAYS a bad idea on a manual transmission. Just one time leave it in gear and you have thousands in damage to your front end.
The shut down sequence works pretty well. It will also disable the remstart if the door is opened or if the alarm is set off, it will disable the remstart.
So if you have a prox sensor it's pretty much impossible for someone to put the car in gear after you shut it down. (assuming you left the top down or windows and someone reached in to put it in gear)
