Default Deeper Speakers, how?

Has anyone tried to put in 70mm deep speaker in the door?

How did you make them fit?

I was thinking maybe if I just added about 4 or 5 mm rubber ring inbetween the basket and the door... would that work? Would the front of the speaker hit the door panel? I seem to recall that the door had extra space between it and the speaker... more then 4mm?

Thanks in advance!

I used DynAudios 2 way comp set that has a 7" woofer. It is 77mm. I believe the installer used an mdf ring to make it fit. Rubber is not the best to spongy and will give and wear.

I don't remember the exact dimensions, but I put 6.5" Audax woofers wif large magnets in my doors. I removed the stock plastic basket (had to, the hole was too small) and made a spacer from 3/4" hardwood. I used counter-sunk screws to mount the spacer ring to the door using the factory holes, then screwed my speakers to the spacer ring.

Even with the 3/4" spacer they still cleared the door panels, but not by much. I think with the 3/4" spacer I measured just over 3" of depth available (76mm) till you hit the window glass.

Gold,

You could always do spacers (although I wouldn't go for anything thicker than about 1/4" as the panels might start to bulge), but if you want to put in a little more work, try working with the window. The part that holds us back from a deeper speaker is the leaf-switch stop attached to the window (the white round thingy). I'm sure anyone with a reasonable size set of cahones could remove the window, drill a new hole for the white thingy, move the leaf switch, and VOILA...instant extra 1/2" mounting depth. The spacer would certainly work, but for those cases where you need a LOT of extra depth...

I installed my Dynaudio 7" woofers (just like Mike) with 1/2" MDF rings between the basket and the door and I have had 0 difficulties with the window/woofer...

Mikes2k,

Did your installer have to "shave" a bit of door steel to make the Dynaudio woofers fit? Just curious... I had to...

I used 5/8 Pine shelfing (yes!) to make my adapter rings. I chose pine because it's easy to work with, and doesn't swell up like MDF or particleboard.

Even with my Sony 3 ways, I still have a bit of room.
