The way I am seeing your sketches, the grill protects only the middle of the speaker, not the entire speaker.

Waiting on a quote for the anodizing. Plus - since the assembly process will require "oven-brazing" it may not be able to be anodized as there may be some exposed brazing compound that will not accept the etch as well as the aluminum leaving a color disparity at the joints.

I guess my biggest concern is protecting the speaker from a box, or some medium sized item, in the trunk "moving/falling" into it; I'm not concerned with "puncture" type accidents, as no grill really would protect from that.

As drawn in the first post, what if you made enough horizonatal slats to cover the speaker from top to bottom (the base would be a complete circle)? No need for the waffle look. Just my feedback, so take it for what it is worth.

William...

either design is sweet by me. both offer enough protection for me, as my main concern will be soft luggage for those short weekend jaunts w/ the wife.

i like the 2nd design as well as it looks really sharp, too, but i'm really flexible. also InsaneInNC's idea of adding a few more horizontal slats works for me, though i suspect that actually creating a full circle would increase the complexity of manufacturing... to some extent, i'm sure this is as simple as it is to keep manufacturing costs down for what could be a very limited run custom designed item.

and i understand about the anodizing... that may rule it out entirely... my paintball gun is anodized a glossy black w/ a dark blue marbling, and i just love the way it looks, so i'm always, "Oooo... anodize it!" black powdercoating is fine too... but, i'd be just as happy as pie with a brushed look...
did i mention i'm pretty flexible?

After getting the first proto-type it was evident that it would not work for a high-excursion sub in its current dimensional configuration. A second prototype was made allowing for higher excursion subs (using the same design concept), however, I was not confortable with its durability and feared that a solid angular impact could bend portions of it into the sub (causing damage to the cone or surround).

So my machinist is making a couple of proto-types of his own design that I can beat on early next week. Sometimes it is better to allow the builder to approach it from a funtional direction and then look at ways to make it sexy.

Thanks to PJK3 for measuring total excursion from the enclosure face. Otherwise I may have moved forward with building a bunch of these things that you ED guys could not have used.

Sorry for the delay,

William

np...

anyone else care to make an enclosure face to max excursion measurement?? i'd like to have mine verified.

believe it or not, i set mine up to run a 35 hz test tone, with slight amp clipping, and just before the speaker reached it's mechanical limitations --

i measured 1.5" from enclosure face to full excursion!

what ever happened to a 17/18mm 1 way xmax?!
