Default Help

I have a Pioneer Premiere HU, Rockford Fosgate 4ch amp, Pioneer XM receiver, and factory speakers installed.

My left side speakers went out a few years back and then came back on before I addressed the issue. Almost 2 years later it has done it again. The problem lasted for a week, fixed itself for a day, and has now been out for almost 2 weeks.

If I turn my balance all the way to the left side I can hear music from the left side speakers (barely - it is like a whisper)...The right side speakers appear fine. I cannot find a Rockford amp key to pull the cover off and test the connections and none of my allen wrenches std or metric seem to fit.

Since the problem comes and goes and is present on all inputs my first guess is a loose connection. I would like to know if anyone else might know what this problem is before I go on my quest for an amp key and then chasing cable all through my car.

I have not ruled out the possibility of a failing channel in the amp or HU...if anyone can eliminate those possibilites for me that would be appreciated as well.

Any advice would be great especially if it saves me from chasing cables all through my car looking for a loose connection that may not exist.

It almost sounds like a loose connection on the door speaker itself... so its ground to the car. I've seen that happen before. But the only way to know that, is to open it up.

However before you do that you should test it out and see. Just switch the right and left channels on the amp and see what happens. if the problem moves to the other side, then there's no point in opening up the door. If it stays there then switch the RCA's and see if it move to the other side. If yes then you should look at the HU if no then take a closer look at the amp.

And so on. Test first, fix or replace second

I appreciate the help. I still have been unable to get my hands on a Rockford amp key to remove the end caps. I was however able to get my hands on the rca inputs without removing the cap and reverse the inputs. The problem did in fact move to the other side as suspected. So the good news is that I have found my problem. The bad news is that I not only have to replace an amp, I have to find an amp key to remove the other end cap so that I can disconnect all of the power cables.

You could just drill them out if the amp is junk anyway. No sense and messing around with the stupid thing.

Wait a minute. If you swapped the RCA input cables to the amp and the problem moved to the other side then you proved that your amp, speaker wires and speakers are OK. The problem should reside in your head unit or RCA cables..... or am I just losing my mind?
