I am trying to mount hidden 2 amps. A 4 channel inside my spare and a 2 channel in the space to the left of the spare. I am trying to keep the spare. The 2 channel "could" fit inside the foam of the toolkit with a small amount of chopping, although I have serious heat dissipation concerns in that spot.
Background, I just want better and more sound than I got stock on my 2004 S2K. I do not want/need any bling. I have been discouraged by other installation reports on this and other site so I decided to install everything myself. I will take my time and get it the way I want.
I have some questions about how to use the space to the left of the spare.
Does anyone have pictures of how they mounted an amp there?
The area is very tight, how do you cool your amp? I am afraid it will overheat without a fan.
There is a sensor there (gas tank?) and I may need to at least bend it over with my install. How much can I abuse this sensor. See image
Any information would be helpful. I am trying to document this entire process because I am in no way an install guru or do it yourselfer and others may benefit. I think the last stereo work I did was in my 1967 Chevy Impala convertible (22 years ago). I have at least done my homework on this site and on Basic Car Audio
Sorry that I do not have a photo, but I have a JL Audio 300/4 in there on top of the fuel tank. I have the wire going into the tank bent over all the way, but put rubber stoppers about 1/2 inch high on either side of the wire, so that it would not be compressed by the weight of the amp, and to protect the place where the wire goes down through the metal. The amp is in there tight, and I worried about overheating, but the shop I use has installed this amp in more than one s2000 and has not had overheating problems. You're mileage may vary. Also, watch out for the rubber boot on the fuel filler pipe. All in all, it's a tight fit, but if you can get it secured well, it is the perfect stealth mounting location.
Xtant 403A mounted above the Fuel sensor. I would be concerned about an amp without a fan. When I originally did the install, the spare was still installed and I never had an overheating problem
Custom mounting bracket, and amp cover. I made the bracket to use existing screw holes for the bracket around the fuel sensor. No holes drilled in Car.
Custom made bracket. I used 3m vercro to secure the amp to the bracket. Even in Auto-X the amp never moved.
1st ever changer mounted in secret compartment. BTW the changer, pocket, cable and adaptor for the factory radio are now for sale. I have replaced the changer with an Ipod, and Alpine's interface.
changer and pocket
Custom made door speaker spacers, sealed to the door with silicone. This mod enhanced midbass due to less flexing around the speaker (metal flexes, the spacer is 1/2" plastic.

Wow nice Mitch. Great suggestions on the bracket and velcro and a nice install. I assume you meant that heat was NOT a problem with the amp. Your amp is about twice as long as the class D I am putting in Back to the store for some aluminum angle pieces.
