I have done searches in the forums and while I know it is possible to hardwire a Radar Detector, I know next to nothing about car electronics and would like some more specific information. I have an existing RD and would like to just cut the cord and splice it into one of the open slots in the fuse panel, but have no idea how to do it. I would like it to be on/off w/the ignition as well. Any "basic" information you can provide in how to do that would be appreciated.

Also, I would like to make the power outlet in the back constantly powered. I have a cellular that I keep plugged in and it can't get charged if the outlet isn't powered the whole time. Is there a simple way to do this.

Thanks in advance for any help!

What kind of radar detector do you have? There was a long thread with photos for the Valentine 1 (search for "Valentine install"), and I posted directions for installing Passports at http://www.s2000online.com/forums/showthre...p?threadid=9043 .

I hardwired mine in 15 minutes, once I got back from Radio Shack, so it isn't very hard to do.

Excellent post Tanq- especially the one stamped 04-07-2001 12:30 AM. I don't know how I missed it.

I am going to pick up some supplies on the way home, and see what I can do. It is a top model Whistler and have used it for a year or so with good luck.

Any thoughts on the rear "cig plug" outlet?

Thx.

The problem with the power socket is that it's fused with some of the audio circuits so you don't want to mess with those. If it were me, I would go to Radio Shack and pick up a power socket (with wires) and wire it direct to the empty pin (one of the three will be "hot" all the time, one is hot with ignition and the last one is hot when instruments are on - use voltmeter to find the one that's hot all the time) on the left side of the fuse block next to the left kick panel. Put in an in-line fuse for protection. There's also a ground terminal up and above the fuse box against the body. You can velcro the socket in some convenient place.

loki's thread on his Valentine One install is one of the best and has pictures of where on the fuse box to connect.

There are several ways to hardwire or softwire the S2K for RD. Really depends on the unit you are using. You can go to the #3 open on the fuseblock for hot...or you can go to the overhead light (for a Passport). You can also hardwire a passport going under the weather seal to the # 3 plug......

Email me if you need more help.
